Canada third in duet and team free programs at Brazil Open Synchronized Swimming Competition
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Karine Thomas and Stephanie Leclair of Gatineau, Que., were third in the duet free program then helped Canada to the same result in the team free on Sunday to conclude the Brazil Open synchronized swimming competition.
Canada fielded its team for the 2013 FINA World Championships set for July 19 to August 4 in Barcelona.
In duet, Ona Carbonell and Margalida Crespi of Spain were first with 94.125 points, Lolita Ananasova and Anna Voloshyna of Ukraine was second at 91.462 and Thomas and Leclair followed at 88.162.
‘’We reached our objectives for this competition,’’ said Leclair. ‘’We stayed close together and were well synchronized. We also have one of the most original choreographies and that stood out as well. Now we need maintain our strength from start to finish in the program.’’’
In team, Spain topped the standings scoring 93.650, Ukraine was second at 93.375 and Canada third at 88.800. The Canadian swimmers were Leclair, Thomas, Chloé Isaac of Brossard, Que., Jacqueline Simoneau of Montreal, Annabelle Frappier of Mont-St-Hilaire, Que., Emilia Kopcik of Surrey, B.C., Marie-Lou Morin of Westmount, Que., and Sandy Gill of Coquitlam, B.C.
‘’Again we set a standard for ourselves at this meet and reached it,’’ said Leclair. ‘’It gives us a lot of confidence heading into the final part of our preparations for the worlds.’’
On Saturday, Isaac was third in the solo free program.
