Only 30 days to go until FINA's big Aquatics Festival in Barcelona! During 17 days, more than 2,000 athletes coming from the five continents (about 180 nations) will display the pinnacle of FINA sports. The exciting novelty at this 15th edition is the introduction of high diving on the World Championships programme. As a result, a total 68 medals will be on offer in Barcelona across the six FINA disciplines: Swimming, Diving, Open Water Swimming, Synchronised Swimming, Water Polo and High Diving. The event will provide the last opportunity for divers from top nations in the sport to fine-tune their preparation in the lead-up to the 15th FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain, next July. Going into Bolzano, China's Chao He (current world n.8) positions himself as top qualifier in the men's 3m springboard. He dominated the first four legs of the Grand Prix in the event and enjoys a comfortable margin ahead of closest challengers Zhiyi Sun (CHN, world n.13) and Constantin Blaha (AUT, world n.16). On the higher board, Jian Yang (CHN, world n.5) has managed to hold at bay Maxim Bouchard (CAN, world n.15) and Siyi Xie (CHN, world n.21), who currently share the second spot. Making the women's 3m springboard top-3 so far are Jiao Liu (CHN, world n.7), Dolores Hernandez (MEX, world n.12) and Han Wang (CHN, world n.6). In the 10m platform, Jie Lian (CHN, world n.10) carries the lead while teammate Xiaohui Huang (world n.13) and Ukraine's Iulia Prokopchuk (world n.7) are currently on a tie for second place. China tops the ranking in all four synchro events. Last year, the traditional diving powerhouse swept all events but the men's 3m springboard, which was won by Spain's Javier Illana. |
