Canadian record for Katerine Savard in 50m butterfly at Canada Cup
MONTREAL –Olympic team member Katerine Savard of Quebec City broke the Canadian record in the women’s 50-metre butterfly on Saturday at the Canada Cup swimming competition.
Savard, tuning up for the FINA World Championships July 19-August 4 in Barcelona, clocked 26.20 seconds to eclipse the previous mark of 26.35 set by Noemie Thomas of Vancouver at the world championship trials this past spring in Victoria.
Sandrine Mainville of Montreal was second in the race in 26.70 and Victoria Poon of Montreal third in 27.33. Mainville and Poon are also headed to Barcelona.
It was also a solid day for more world team members. Martha McCabe of Toronto, a bronze medallist in the 200-m breaststroke at the 2011 worlds, won the women’s 100-m breaststroke, Richard Funk of Edmonton took the men’s 100-m breast while Samantha Cheverton of Pointe-Claire, Que., and Blake Worsley of Vancouver was were the 200-m freestyle winners.
In Para swimming, two of Canada’s top stars for the IPC World Championships August 12-18 in Montreal were victorious. World record holders and Paralympic Games champions Benoit Huot and Valerie Grand’Maison of Montreal won their respective 200-m individual medley races.
Competition continues ends Sunday at Parc Jean-Drapeau.
