| Medellín secures landslide victory on insidethegames poll on eve of 2018 Youth Olympics vote
July 3 - Medellín has secured victory by an overwhelming margin on the insidethegames poll asking readers which city they think should hold the 2018 Youth Olympics just a day before the International Olympic Committee (IOC) elects the host city. The Colombian city garnered 114,805 of the 154,310 total votes – translating to 74.4 per cent, and was followed by Glasgow in Scotland, which received 34,825 votes or 22.6 per cent. However, Argentina's capital Buenos Aires did not fare as well, claiming 4,680 votes, which is just 3 per cent of the total. It is also worth highlighting the populations of the three cities vying to host the 2018 Youth Games as Medellín has more than 3.5 million people, Buenos Aires has 2.891 million, while Glasgow has a population of just 598,830. The bidding process started with six cities in the ring, with bids entered from three European cities – Glasgow, Rotterdam and Poznań – and three from American cities – Buenos Aires, Medellín and Guadalajara – by the March 1 deadline last year. Poznań subsequently went on to withdraw its bid in October 2012, while Guadalajara and Rotterdam failed to make it the candidate stage when the IOC executive board met on February 13, 2013. The end is now in sight as the IOC meets in Lausanne tomorrow to elect the host city of the third Summer Youth Olympic Games in 2018. To see the full results click here.
