Samantha Nealon sixth in synchronized swimming free solo event at 2013 Summer Universiade

KAZAN, Russia – Samantha Nealon of Morriston, Ont., showed she could compete against a field of Olympians on Tuesday placing sixth in the free solo event to conclude the synchronized swimming competition at the 2013 Universiade.

Svetlana Romashina of Russia won the gold medal with 98.020 points, Yukiko Inui of Japan was second at 92.070 and Linda Cerruti of Italy was third at 88.790.  Four of the five athletes ahead of Nealon competed at the Olympic Games last year.

Nealon, a national junior team member in 2012, scored 83.750 performing to Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah.

“It went very well and I felt powerful in the water,” said Nealon, a 19-year-old student at Concordia University in Montreal.  “I was really excited to show the world what I could do.  I learned a lot competing against this field and it really motivates me to keep swimming in the solo events in the future.”

Canada was also fourth in the team event on Monday.  This was the first time synchronized swimming was an official sport at the Games.
