OPEN WATER COMPETITION SCHEDULE
Saturday 20 July to Saturday 27 July - Open Water Competition
Sat 20 Jul - Men’s and Women’s 5km - from 10.00am local time
Lurz has won a medal in eight of the 13 world championship editions of this race since its inception in 1998.
If Lurz was his own NOC, he would be equal second with Italy with eight total medals in this discipline, behind only Russia (nine).
Three different swimmers have won silver behind Lurz twice each in this discipline: Chip Peterson (USA, 2005, 2006), Evgeny Drattsev (RUS, 2007, 2010) and Spyridon Gianniotis (GRE, 2009, 2011).
Lurz owns both the quickest winning time in this discipline, 51:17.02 in 2005 in Montreal, and the slowest, 1:04:32.3 in 2006 in Naples.
Of the four NOCs to have won this race, Australia is the only one that has not won it multiple times. Grant Cleland's win in 2004 is Australia's lone victory, while Italy (two), Russia (three) and Germany (seven) all have multiple wins.
In 2004, Grant Cleland (AUS) became the last person to be crowned world champion in the 5k event before Thomas Lurz started his streak of seven successive world titles in this event.
At the last four world championships, there have been four different winners from four different NOCs. During that time, the 12 medals were won by swimmers from seven different NOCs.
The United States is the only NOC to have produced multiple gold medallists (two) in this discipline.
Two other NOCs have won multiple gold medals – Russia (five) and Italy (three) – but in both cases all victories were courtesy of one swimmer.
Russia leads all NOCs with nine total medals in this discipline and can become the first NOC to reach 10. Ilchenko won six of Russia's nine medals (five gold medals and one silver medal).
Seven of the 13 winners of this race were teenagers on the day they won. Ilchenko won all five of her gold medals as a teenager.
Youngest winner: Erica Rose (USA) at 15-184 in 1998. Oldest winner: Valli at 31-59 in 2003.
The winning time at the last world championships in 2011 was slower than when this race was held for the first time, in 1998.

Barcelona, 15th July 2013 With the aim to minimize risks and ensure an excellent quality in the harbour´s waters, the Port of Barcelona has designed a special device to get the venues ready for the 15th FINA World Championships Barcelona 2013 which commences this Friday. Nearly 300 athletes will compete in the two domains that will take place at the Moll de la Fusta: open water swimming (20th, 22nd, 23rd, 25th and 27th July) with a total of seven events and high diving (29th, 30th and 31st July) with the women´s and men´s competition. For the last year and a half samples have been taken of the microbiological quality of the waters with results comparable to those of the nearby beaches. The Port of Barcelona has planned an exhaustive sanitary plan that begins with the paralysation of all the works at the Moll de la Fusta. At the same time, they will be stopping the provision of fuel to sports boats moored in the Port Vell. There will also be an intense clean of the rim of the harbour and a net will be installed to intercept jellyfish and prevent their access to the zone where the events will be disputed. To ensure that the devices are working correctly, samples of water will be taken every day to check the quality. It examines the dissolved oxygen, the level of cloudiness, salinity, superficial current and the presence of contaminants using a fluorescent sensor.
