Barcelona, 19 July 2013 FINA President, Dr. Julio C. Maglione, awarded the two cities with the right to stage FINA World Championships. In a packed conference room at the Palau Sant Jordi, main competition venue of the 15th FINA World Championships Barcelona 2013, the two delegations celebrated their success. “The presentations of the two cities were extraordinary,” said Maglione. “We are very happy because FINA have great hosts with 2015 in Kazan, 2017 in Mexico, 2019 in Gwangju and 2021 in Budapest. Four excellent cities and the organization is working very well.” Gwangju’s Mayor, Kang Un-tae, and Hungary’s Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, attended the presentation in the Catalan capital. Gwangju is the third Asian country to host the FINA World Championships since the event emerged in 1973 (Belgrade, Serbia). In 2021, the championships will be held in Hungary for the first time. This year’s host, Barcelona, is ready to organize the event for the second time after 2003.
