Chloe Isaac sixth in solo tech at FINA World Championships
BARCELONA – Chloe Isaac of Brossard, Que., took sixth spot in the solo technical final on Saturday in synchronized swimming action at the FINA World Championships.
Svetlana Romashina of Russia won the gold medal with 96.800 points, Xuechen Huang of China was second at 95.500 and Ballastero Carbonell of Spain third at 94.400. Isaac, also sixth after morning prelims, totaled 90.600 in her first year as Canada’s soloist at the senior level.
Isaac was a member of the 2012 Olympic squad that was fourth in the team event and is competing at her third world championships. She helped Canada to bronze in the team combo in both 2009 and 2011. At the 2008 world juniors, she took silver in solo and bronze in duet.
‘’I’m extremely pleased with my performance today,’’ said Isaac, 22, who performed to Doris Day’s Perhaps. ‘’I went out there confident and not feeling any pressure. I just wanted to to do my best against an experienced field.’’
Isaac was pleased with the pool set-up for the competition.
‘’They really made it into a big show which was great for the swimmers and spectators,’’ she said. ‘’It put the emphasis on the athletes. This is certainly one of the best world championships I have been to.’’
In the team technical preliminaries, Russia stands first with 96.500 points, Spain is second at 94.700 and Ukraine third at 93.200. Japan follows in fourth at 92.200 and Canada performing a new routine called Army is fifth at 90.100.
The Canadian swimmers were Annabelle Frappier of Mont-St-Hilaire, Que., Sandy Gill of Coquitlam, B.C., Chloe Isaac of Brossard, Que., Emilia Kopcik of Surrey, B.C., Marie-Lou Morin of Westmount, Que., Jacqueline Simoneau of Montreal and Stéphanie Leclair and Karine Thomas, both of Gatineau, Que.
In the routine, the Canadians were a female army and the theme allowed the swimmers to display the precise technical requirements for the event.
‘’This was the first time we performed this routine and we were really excited about showing it to the public after working on it for six months,’’ said Thomas, the team technical captain. ‘’The result wasn’t something we were going to be concerned about. We just wanted to deliver a solid performance.’’
Competition continues Sunday with the prelims and final for the duet technical event and prelims for team combo. The team technical final is Monday,
