Evan White breaks record at Summer Nationals
POINTE-CLAIRE, Que. – Evan White of Oakville, Ont., lowered his 15-17 national age group record in the 200-metre individual medley on Saturday to conclude the 2013 Summer Nationals swimming competition.
White clocked two minutes and 01.15 seconds to eclipse the previous mark of 2:02.38 set earlier this season. Luke Reilly of Vancouver was second at 2:05.10.
‘’I was hoping to lower it again here,’’ said White. ‘’The key was my 15-mete breakout on he start and my backstroke has improved.’’
White has one of the 28 spots that were up for grabs this week for the FINA World Junior Championships August 26-31 in Dubai. (see team list below)
Other winners in men’s competition were David Hibberd of Burnaby, B.C., in the 50-m freestyle, Nick Kostiuk of Edmonton in the 200-m breaststroke, Kier Maitland of Edmonton in the 1500-m freestyle and the Oakville Aquatic Club in the 4X100 medley relay.
On the women’s side, Ariane Mainville of Montreal clocked a personal best 25.79 for the gold in the 50-m freestyle. Michelle Williams of North York, Ont., was second in 25.91 and Rebecca Terejko of Brantford, Ont., third in 26.13.
Mainville beat her personal best by half a second to earn her first career senior national crown.
‘’I never expected to go under 26 seconds,’’ said Mainville, 19, whose older sister Sandrine in currently with the Canadian team at the FINA World Championships in Barcelona. ‘’But I had a clean start and that’s probably the most important factor if you want to do well in this event.’’
Other winners in women’s competition were Marni Oldershaw of Oakville, Ont., in the 200-m IM, Kierra Smith of Kelowna, B.C., in the 20-m breaststroke and Montreal’s Club CAMO in the 4X100-m medley relay.
