Danielle Hanus up to three gold at age group nationals
MONTREAL – Danielle Hanus of Newmarket, Ont., has found a remedy to the sting of not making the world junior team at last week’s summer nationals: relax and have fun.
Hanus is up to a meet high three individual gold after two days of competition at the 2013 Canadian Age Group Nationals at the Parc Jean-Drapeau Aquatic Complex. Competing in the 15 and under age group she won the 100-m butterfly on Wednesday and took the 400-m individual medley and 50-m backstroke on Thursday.
Her time in the 400-m IM was particularly impressive. She clocked four minutes and 57.12 seconds eclipsing her previous best by eight seconds.
‘’The pressure really built up last week because I wanted to do so well,’’ said Hanus, 15. ‘’It was a bit of a disappointment. I wasn’t expecting to this well here but I came back determined and have been able to enjoy myself a lot more.’’
Meanwhile Javier Acevedo of Ajax, Ont., named the top rookie at the Summer Nationals, has carried his success over to the age group nationals with a medal of each colour so far including a win Thursday in the 100-m freestyle in the boys 15 and under division.
‘’That was such a thrill to get top rookie last week, it gave me a lot of confidence,’’ said Acavedo. ‘’The big difference this season is that I am learning a lot quicker from my mistakes.’’
More than 900 athletes from 159 clubs are competing in the 12 and under, 13 and under, 15 and under and 16-18 age groups for the girls and the 13 and under, 14 and under, 15 and under, 16 and under and 17-18 age group for the boys.
Competition in the pool continues until July 28 with preliminaries at 9 a.m. and finals at 5:30 p.m. The open water races are set for July 29 at the nearby Olympic rowing basin at 9 a.m.
