Canada sixth in team free final at FINA World Championships

BARCELONA – Canada finished sixth in the team free final on Friday in synchronized swimming at the FINA World Championships.

Russia collected its sixth gold in six synchro finals this week tabulating 97.400 points.  Spain was second at 94.230 and Ukraine third at 93.640.

Canada remained in sixth spot with 88.620 interpreting its Snakes and Ladders routine.  The Canadian swimmers were Sandy Gill of Coquitlam, B.C., Chloe Isaac of Brossard, Que., Emilia Kopcik of Surrey, B.C., Lisa Mikelberg of Montreal, Marie-Lou Morin of Westmount, Que., Jacqueline Simoneau of Montreal and Stéphanie Leclair and  Karine Thomas, both of Gatineau, Que.

‘’It was better than in preliminaries,’’ said Leclair, the team captain.  ‘’Our acrobatic lifts in particular were a lot stronger. But we definitely have a lot of work to do over the next couple of years.  These worlds were really a learning experience for us.’’

Synchronized swimming competition ends Saturday with the team combo final.  Canada was fifth after last Sunday’s prelims.
