10 New World Records in FINA World Cups in Eindhoven & Berlin

BERLIN, GERMANY--Hungary's Katinka Hosszú and Spain's Mireia Belmonte both swam under two short-course World Records each, over the weekend at the second meet of the 2013 World Cup in Berlin. Hosszú matched the two records she swam at the first meet earlier in the week, on Sunday lowering the women's 100 IM mark she swam Thursday and getting the 400 IM mark. In prelims of the 100 IM, Hosszú swam a 57.45 to go under the 57.50 she swam on Thursday. In the women's 400 IM, she swam 4:20.85 to win the event and go under the 4:21.04 World Record swum by the USA's Julia Smit in December 2009.

Belmonte swam under one World mark on Saturday and another on Sunday, bettering marks held by France's Camille Muffat in both. On Saturday, Belmonte won the women's 800 free in 7:59.34, bettering Muffat's World mark of 8:01.06 swum at the 2012 France 25 Championships last November. On Sunday, Belmonte won the women's 400 free in 3:54.52, bettering Muffat's World mark of 3:54.85 swum at the 2013 European Short Course Championships last November.

FINA PRESS RELEASE

Lausanne (SUI), August 13, 2013 – Following the success of the 15th FINA World
Championships in Barcelona (ESP), the best swimmers of the planet, including many
World champions, gathered for the first two legs of the FINA Swimming World Cup (25mpool) and the level of performances continued to be very high. On August 7-8, Eindhoven
(NED) hosted the inaugural meet of the year’s series, and no less than six World Records
were established. On August 10-11, in Berlin (GER), the saga continued, with four more
WR. The two legs formed the first cluster of the 2013 circuit, which will have two more, in
October and November.
“The decision of staging the World Cup immediately after the FINA World Championships
paid off. Our swimmers were in great shape and the success of Aquatics could have an
additional visibility and exposure, beyond the fantastic two weeks in Barcelona. This is
certainly a model to be repeated in the future, as it was very appreciated by the athletes,
coaches and the media”, considered FINA President Dr. Julio C. Maglione.
The World Cup continues with the second cluster in Moscow (RUS, October 12-13),
Dubai (UAE, October 17-18) and Doha (QAT, October 20-21), while the third and last
cluster takes place in Singapore (SIN, November 5-6), Tokyo (JPN, November 9-10) and
