Italy beats Montenegro, Serbia and Hungary clinch Super Final spot

WPFour-time World League winner Serbia and reigning World champions Hungary are the first teams to secure a spot in the men's Super Final, their sixth and seventh participation since the launch of the competition in 2002. Both teams remained unchallenged in the European preliminaries of the 2014 FINA Men's Water Polo World League so far, claiming three wins each.

On March 11 (round 5), Serbia had an easy win over Romania 4-7 (1-2, 0-1, 2-1, 1-3) in Bucharest, totalling 9 points in the Group A rankings. Greece proved too strong for 2012 Olympic champions Croatia, winning 8-7 (1-1, 2-2, 3-2, 2-2) in Patras, thus securing a second place in Group B.

Slovakia recorded their first win in Group C, beating Germany 12-9 (3-3, 1-2, 4-2, 4-2) in Bratislava. In Bari, the Italian squad stunned top qualifier Montenegro, edging the World number 2 by just one goal 9-10 (4-1, 1-2, 3-4, 2-2). Italy's Alex Giorgetti scored four goals, sealing the home side's victory. Italy closed the gap with Montenegro, each totalling 12 points.

In the final preliminary round in April, Serbia receives Russia in Kragujevac, Hungary plays Croatia in Pecs, Slovakia faces Italy in Kosice and Montenegro meets Germany (city tbc).

The men's water polo teams of Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Japan, Kazakhstan, South Africa and USA are gearing up for the World League’s Intercontinental Tournament for America, Asia, Africa and Oceania, organised in Shanghai (CHN) from May 26-June 1, 2014.
