SYDNEY, Australia ý Meryn McCann roared back from sixth spot at the turn for her second individual gold at the Australian Age Swimming Championships.

The Burlington, Ont., native clocked 1:03.28 to edge Monique Rae of Australia (1:03.63) to win gold in the womenýs 100-m backstroke for 15-year-olds Thursday. Australian Shayna Jack was third in 1:04.19 and Ingrid Wilm of Calgary was fourth in 1:04.66.

ýIt was OK,ý said McCann. ýI was feeling a little tired and the girls were coming out fast. Despite being behind early I felt I improved on my first 20 metres. The start of my race is something Iýve been working on a lot.ý

Meanwhile, Kelsey Wog of Winnipeg lowered her personal best by five seconds to win the silver medal in the 15-year-old 400-m individual medley in 4:56.79. Chelsey Gubecka of Australia took gold in 4:51.40.

ýMy biggest improvement came in the butterfly and backstroke legs of the race,ý said Wog, also a silver medallist in the 100-m breaststroke this week. ýI just paced myself better in those two strokes.ý

Mary-Sophie Harvey of Trois-Rivieres, Que., added to her impressive medal haul, taking a silver in the 14-year-old 200-m breaststroke. After four days of competition, Harvey has five gold medals, a silver and a bronze.

Olivia Anderson of Mississauga, Ont., (400-m freestyle for 14-year-olds) and Danielle Hanus of Newmarket, Ont., (400-m IM for 15-year-olds) each picked up a bronze.

ýI was trying to focus primarily on my turns,ý said Anderson, who clocked a personal best 4:20.44. ýI had a good middle section in my race which is an area I had been struggling with.ý

Georgia Kidd of St. Albert, Alta., was fourth in the womenýs 16-year-old 200-m freestyle while for the men Javier Acevedo of Scarborough, Ont., was eighth in the 16-year-old 200-m freestyle and Christian Ng of Unionville, Ont., ninth in the 17-18 400-m IM.
