Marathon racing resumes in Setubal on June 28

In the spotlight

Cunha (BRA)After Viedma (ARG) and Cancun (MEX), Setubal (POR) will host the third leg of the FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup 2014 on June 28 with some of the world's best marathon swimmers taking the departure.

Simone Ruffini of Italy, second in Race 2 on April 5, currently leads the men's rankings. Germany's Christian Reichert, third in Race 1 on February 1, is tied in second with compatriot Thomas Lurz, who touched first in Cancun.

Lurz' incredible roll of honour includes an Olympic silver from the 2012 London Olympics and a medal of each colour at the FINA World Championships in Barcelona last year. He is a three-time winner of the FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup (2013, 2011 and 2009) and totals a record 21 victories in the event.

Reigning World champion Poliana Okimoto of Brazil sits atop the women's general standings so far, climbing the podium twice (for a gold and silver) this season. Okimoto has claimed the most wins (16) at the World Cup among women. Never too far away, compatriot Ana Marcela Cunha, who finished twice behind Okimoto this year for a silver and bronze, earned two World Cup titles (2012 and 2010). 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Martina Grimaldi (ITA), first in Cancun, is currently third.

Setubal is back in the World Cup circuit, after hosting a leg from 2007 to 2011. The eight-stop World Cup circuit 2014 will then head to Canada for three races on July 24, 31 and August 9.
