Michael Phelps Named Best Athlete of Decade…
The greatest swimmer of all-time, Michael Phelps, was recognized by Sports Illustrated as the best athlete of the last decade for his accomplishments in the pool.
From 2004-2014, Phelps won a record 22 Olympic medals, 18 gold, in events that included butterfly, freestyle, medley and relays. His eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Games (five individual, three relays) are a record for a single Olympics. He also won 21 World Championships and 50 career national titles during the decade.
Ohno to Host Apolo Ohno Invitational…
Apolo Ohno, the most decorated American in Winter Olympic history, will host the inaugural Apolo Ohno Invitational on Friday, November 21, 2014. In effort to raise the profile of speed skating, the first-of-its-kind invitational will showcase leading speed skaters from the United States, Canada, the Netherlands and Asia. In partnership with U.S. Speedskating, Utah Sports Commission and EnergySolutions Arena, the venue where he won two gold medals at the 2002 Games, Ohno will serve as the event host and color commentator for the event’s television broadcast.
Jorgensen Clinches World Title…
World no. 1 ranked female triathlete Gwen Jorgensen claimed the ITU World Triathlon Championship on Saturday, capping a record-breaking season with a victory at the Grand Final in Edmonton and becoming the first American to win the title since 2004. She has earned eight career ITU World Triathlon Series wins and won five titles this season, becoming the only woman in WTS history to win five events. She launched the Gwen Jorgensen Scholarship, created to assist junior draft-legal triathletes and paratriathletes in their pursuit of excellence in the sport.
Adrian Set to Swim in Inaugural Singapore Meet…
“Fastest Man in the Pool” Nathan Adrian will compete in the inaugural Singapore Swim Stars meet this weekend. Adrian, who is looking to become the first American to win the 100m freestyle in back-to-back Olympics since 1928, is one of 12 Olympic champions and 21 World champions who will participate in "the most prestigious event outside of the Olympics and world championships."
Wescott & Shiffrin Featured in Warren Miller Film…
Olympic gold medalists Seth Wescott and Mikaela Shiffrin are in Warren Miller’s new “No Turning Back” film that pays homage to 65 years of mountain culture and adventure filmmaking. The picture takes viewers to Greece, Japan, Switzerland, Norway, Montana, Alaska, and Colorado, and features athletes such as Ted Ligety, Julia Mancuso and Rob Kingwill, among others.
Anderson Finalist for Sportswoman of the Year…
First female Olympic gold medalist in Slopestyle snowboarding, Jamie Anderson, is a finalist for the Women’s Sports Foundation Sportswoman of the Year award. Over the past six months, Anderson claimed gold in her sport’s Olympic debut, won at the 2014 ESPY Awards for Best U.S. Olympic Athlete and Best Female Action Sports Athlete, has been featured on the covers of both Sports Illustrated and ESPN The Magazine Body Issue and was victorious at the Burton U.S. Open. Other finalists include Serena Williams, Tina Maze and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, among others, voting ends September 8th.
Swimmers Make National Team…
Octagon swimmers Michael Phelps, Allison Schmitt, Nathan Adrian, Michael McBroom, Alex Meyer and Tom Shields were all named to the 2014-2015 USA Swimming National Team roster. Phelps, who led the U.S. men with five medals at the Pan Pacific Championships, qualified in four events while Adrian and Shields will both swim in two events. Swimmers were selected based on their times in Olympic events from the combined results of the 2014 Phillips 66 National Championships and the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships, with the top six athletes in each discipline making the team.
