Coaching Experience: Before joining WSC, Shawn coached West Valley Aquatics (WVA) from 2006 to 2016, Hunter Aquatic Team (HAT) from 2004 to 2006, and Hunter High School from 2006 to 2016. He began his coaching career with Taylorsville Aquatic Club (TAC) in 2003.
How Shawn Discovered His Passion for Swimming: Shawn has been involved in swimming since childhood, joining a competitive swim team at age 5 and continuing for 13 years. However, it wasn’t until he took his first coaching job in 2003, to help out a friend, that he truly realized his love for the sport and for helping young people achieve their goals.
Competitive Teams: Shawn began his competitive swimming career with Murray Aquatic Club (MAC) in 1986 before moving to Hunter Aquatic Team (HAT) in 1991 when Hunter High School was built. He finished his competitive career with HAT and Hunter High School in 1999.
Memorable Moment in His Swimming Career: One of Shawn's favorite memories as a swimmer was winning the 1998 5A state championship, during which he tied with his twin brother in the 200 IM.
What He Hopes His Athletes Learn: Shawn hopes that all his athletes feel a sense of belonging on the team, knowing they were cared for and challenged in a way that helped them believe in their ability to tackle difficult tasks without fearing failure.
Hobbies Beyond Swimming: In his free time: Shawn enjoys being with his family, going to Disneyland, fishing, reading, and golfing.
Facts and Family: Shawn has a bachelor's degree in Social Science Teaching from the University of Utah and a Master's degree from the University of Florida. Along with teaching at the high school, he is the head coach of the Men’s and Women’s swimming teams.
He has a supportive and loving wife, Jenny, and three wonderful little children, Zoey, Maxton, and Ellison.

How Dennis Discovered His Passion for Swimming: Dennis began swimming at age 5 with the Kearns Youth Aquatic Club in 1970. His love for swimming has been lifelong, with only a brief break during his teenage years. He has continued swimming for exercise and still competes as a master’s swimmer.
Competitive Teams: Dennis swam for KYAT from ages 6 to 11 before moving to the Murray Aquatic Club from ages 12 to 18. He competed for Bingham (79-81) and West Jordan High Schools (81-83). He then competed for the University of Utah from 1983 to 1987.
Memorable Moments in His Swimming Career: Dennis has had many memorable moments throughout his swimming career, which have deeply influenced his life and passion for the sport. Highlights include winning a state championship, securing a collegiate conference title, qualifying for the Olympic Trials in four events, and competing at the NCAA Championships, which he calls the "fastest meet in the world." His most memorable experience was racing alongside Matt Biondi, an NCAA champion, Olympic gold medalist, and world record holder.
Coaching Experience: After a few brief years of coaching age group and high school swimming, I returned to the U of U as an assistant coach and then head coach for seven years. I am a level 4 ASCA certified coach and have coached numerous collegiate All-Americans and two Olympians. He has a bachelor's and master's of science in exercise and sports science.
What He Hopes His Athletes Learn: Dennis hopes his swimmers become efficient and strong swimmers who develop a lifelong love for the sport.
Hobbies Beyond Swimming: In his free time, Dennis enjoys spending time with his wife, Maggie, a professor of Ballet at the University of Utah, for 32 years, and his two daughters, Arden (23) and Mary Ann (18), and their partners. The family loves to travel and enjoy the outdoors. He also fills his time by listening to podcasts and reading books

How Amy Discovered Her Passion for Swimming: Amy began competitive swimming at age 10 after spending a summer watching the local swim team practice at the pool. Inspired by a friend who was trying out, she decided to join as well and immediately asked for a tryout, igniting her lifelong passion for the sport.
Competitive Teams: Amy swam for the Academy Bullets Swim Club for most of her career and later competed for Lehi High School and Cottonwood Heights Aquatics in Utah. She also represented Team USA at the Parapan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Memorable Moment in Her Swimming Career: One of Amy’s most cherished memories is attending her first Paralympic Trials in 2008, where she met national team members and competed at an elite level. The unforgettable experience of hearing the Paralympic team announced left a lasting impact and paved the way for other memorable moments, including competing at the Parapan American Games.
What She Hopes Her Athletes Learn: Amy encourages her swimmers to dream big, recognize their potential, and strive to be the best athletes they can be both in and out of the pool. She hopes they come to practice each day with a love for swimming, enjoying the camaraderie of their teammates while working hard.
Hobbies Beyond Swimming: Outside the pool, Amy enjoys playing wheelchair basketball, spending time at the lake, being with friends and family, curling up with a good book, and watching movies or TV shows.
How Toni Discovered Her Passion for Swimming: Toni’s journey into swimming began at age 5 when her family was at a running track adjacent to a pool where Excel Aquatics practiced. After connecting with swim parents, her family joined the team, marking the beginning of her lifelong passion for the sport.
Competitive Teams: Toni swam for Excel Aquatics from age 5 to 18 before earning a full scholarship to Clemson University, where she competed from 2005 to 2009.
Memorable Moment in Her Swimming Career: A highlight of Toni’s career was at a meet at the University of Georgia, where she narrowly missed qualifying for the Olympic Trials in the 200 butterfly by just 0.03 seconds. Despite the disappointment, she felt an overwhelming sense of accomplishment and believed that moment validated her hard work, proving she could achieve even greater life goals.
What She Hopes Her Athletes Learn: Toni aims to instill in her athletes the importance of mindset and the impact it has not only on their own growth but also on those around them. She encourages them to set goals, embrace challenges with grit and determination, and find value in both success and failure. To her, swimming is a powerful teacher, fostering mental toughness through the discipline it requires.
Hobbies Beyond Swimming: Outside of swimming, Toni enjoys a range of adventurous activities such as mountain biking, skiing, camping, and hiking. She also loves drawing, woodworking, reading, and spending time with her husband, Josh, and their 9-year-old son, Zander.
How Storie Discovered Her Passion for Swimming: Storie’s love for swimming began when she was young, inspired by watching her brother swim as cross-training for wrestling. Wanting to join in and feeling the competitive spirit between siblings, she quickly fell in love with the sport. After starting with a summer program, she transitioned to a USA swimming program, and her passion for the sport never waned.
Competitive Teams: Storie began her swimming career with the UV Rays before competing for the Lehi Swim Club, Lehi High School, Wasatch High School, and WSC. After high school, she continued her swimming journey with The College of Idaho for one season.
Memorable Moment in Her Swimming Career: One of Storie’s favorite memories is from high school when she competed in the 50 freestyle at a regional competition. Although she only aimed to beat her personal record, she was shocked to find that she not only won the event but also broke her record. The pure joy and excitement from her coaches, captured in priceless photos, is a moment she’ll never forget.

Beyond Swimming: When she is not coaching or swimming, Storie enjoys cooking, baking, making music, hiking, hunting, rock climbing, and spending quality time with her family.
