The Greater Susquehanna Valley YMCA Dolphins offer training and practice groups for swimmers of all ages and ability levels. GSVY's goal is to offer age specific training for all of our athletes geared towards challenging each individual and developing each individual to the best of THEIR abilities.

Novice
Ages 6-10 (5 years old only with coaches’ approval)
Description: This practice group is our beginning level of our competitive team. Swimmers will learn the 4 competitive strokes. Proper technique of body position, arm-strokes, kicking and breathing skills will be the focus.
Practice Level Prerequisites: Swimmers must be able to swim 25 yards freestyle (with rotary breathing), backstroke and understand breaststroke and butterfly. Swimmers must also be comfortable in deep water and in a group setting away from parents.
Practice Goals: Goals of this practice group include: completing a legal 100 IM in a meet, completing a flip turn, streamlining past the flags underwater with dolphin kicks, and flutter kicking as well as proper turns at the walls and starts from a starting block. Swimmers will also learn competitive readiness and practice discipline.
Swim Meet Opportunities: Swimmers will compete in home meets and the Novice Invitationals in addition to end-of-year championship meets.

Age Group
Age 9-13 (8 years old only with coaches’ approval)
This group may be divided into Age Group A and Age Group B if necessary.
Description: Swimmers should be comfortable with training up to 75-90 minutes 4 times a week with good listening skills. They should be able to do both water and dry land workouts. Swimmers should be comfortable with all four competitive strokes as well as at least a 100 IM or up to a 200 IM. They will learn competitive readiness, practice discipline and developing proper stroke technique and forming correct practice habits.
Practice Level Prerequisites: Swimmers must be able to demonstrate a legal 100 or 200 IM, and swim at least 500 yards nonstop with flip turns.
Practice Goals: Swimmers will learn to read a pace clock as well as understand practice performances and how they relate to swim meet performances.
Swim Meet Opportunities: Swimmers will compete in home meets, plus age appropriate invitationals, in addition to end-of-year league championship meet.

Junior
Age 11-15
Description: Swimmers who are comfortable with all four competitive strokes will learn competitive readiness, practice discipline and developing proper stroke technique and forming correct practice habits. Swimmers must be able to follow a practice and go off a pace clock.
Practice Level Prerequisites: A commitment to improve skills and conditioning is a must. Swimmers should be comfortable with training up to 90-105 minutes per day including dryland. 50 free under :30, 100 Free under 1:05, 200 free under 2:30 and 500 free under 6:30, 200 IM around 2:50 or faster.
Practice Goals: YMCA District Qualifying times should be obtained, Swimmers should be able to do sets that include 10 x 100 1:40 or faster. 10 X 50s on 1:00 or faster. Repeat 200 and 300s. Swim a legal 400 IM and 500 freestyle plus be able to competitively compete in 100s of all 4 strokes.
Swim Meet Opportunities: Swimmers will compete in approximately one to two swim meets per month, in addition to end-of-year championship meets.
Equipment needed: Fins, paddles, pull buoy, snorkel optional but suggested.
Senior
Ages 14-21 (13 with coaches’ approval)
Description: This practice group is for older middle school and high school swimmers. This level will prepare the athletes for our final Senior program of the top-level high school age swimmers. Swimmers must be able to perform freestyle repeats up to 500 yards; 200 yards of all strokes (Fly/Back/Breast) with strong technique; endurance and technique to handle practices confidently with a strong commitment.
Practice Goals: A commitment to training and learning is expected. Proper stroke mechanics are necessary, and further emphasis is placed on intense training. A high level of commitment and attendance is required in order to participate in this group. Good training habits are the goals of this group. Swimmers MUST be able to read and follow a practice and a pace clock at a very fast pace. Swimmers must be able to swim a legal 400 IM , 15-30 x 100 1:30 or less freestyle, 12 x 100 1:40 IM, 200 free under 2:10 and 500 free under 5:45, 200 IM under 2:30. Swimmers in this group must be able to at minimum obtain a YMCA District Qualifying time and working towards states.
Swim Meet Opportunities: Swimmers will compete in approximately one-two meets per month, in addition to expected attendance in YMCA Districts, states, and nationals for those who qualify. Swimmers are expected to travel when necessary.
