Carl Hatt Head Coach

Carl enters his 5th season with the Saratoga YMCA Stingrays and has overseen the team qualify up to and over 70 swimmers for the NYS YMCA Championship meet in his 4 prior seasons as head coach while the team has totaled 3 YMCA National qualifiers and several new team records that were set.  The Stingrays also placed 1st in consecuitve seasons in the 2022-2025 Suburban League Championships. Carl works primarily with the Senior Group. 

Carl spent 9 seasons as the head coach with the Glenville YMCA Porpoises (2009-2011) and (2013-2020).  Despite the team's relatively small size and space capabilities, Glenville produced swimmers during his tenure that qualified for NYS YMCA Championships, YMCA National Championships, Speedo Sectional Championships, and Eastern Zone Short Course & Long Course Championships. Glenville also finished as high as 3rd for the summer 2019 Suburban League Championship meet.  

Carl began his coaching career with the Cortland YMCA Stingers, working with the 10 and under swimmers from 2003-2005.  He was appointed head coach with the Dryden High School Boys Varsity team from 2004-2008, twice winning the EFA Invitational and guided the team to their best dual meet record since 1997.  Carl also coached the Dryden Girls Diving Team that took home 3 consecutive League diving titles.  He spent two years with the Western Connecticut YMCA Makos as an assistant coach from 2011-2013 working with all age groups in a sabbatical role.  He also served as an assistant coach with the Brookfield (CT) High School Girls Varsity team in 2012 overseeing the sprinters and divers as the team won their first ever SWC Conference title and a runner up finish in the Class M state meet.  Carl also has experience coaching Track & Field with a 5-year head coach run with the Boys and Girls Modified teams at Dryden from 2003-2008 and a 1 year assistant indoor Varsity stint for Brookfield (CT) High School.

Carl played a variety of sports as a youngster but focused on track & field, soccer, and swimming. He competed in the long and triple jump events with league and team honors for the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake track and field team and went on to compete in the jump events for the SUNY Cortland track and field team. Carl kept up with his swimming with the Masters program for the Cortland YMCA while in grad school specializing in freestyle.  As a youngster, he swam on summer teams at Little Troy Park in Charlton, NY in addition to summer club teams in Merced, CA and Midlothian, VA respectively. 

Carl holds an A.A. degree in Liberal Arts from Hudson Valley Community College, a B.S. degree in Physical Education & an M.S. degree in Health Education both from SUNY Cortland.  He lives in Charlton, NY with his wife, Kristen (Schadow) son, Logan and daughter, Eva.

Kate Gawrys Assistant Coach
Coach Kate enters her 5th year with the Stingrays coaching Group 4 and providing the valuable bridge for swimmers to move into the Senior group with her experience, knowledge, & passion for competitive swimming. 
 
Prior to working with the Stingrays, Kate was the head coach for the Ballston Spa Swordfish for 14 years coaching numerous swimmers to Adirondack Gold and Adirondack Silver Championships as well as qualifying swimmers for Speedo Sectionals.  She also served as the Head Coach for the Ballston Spa summer team through the Ballston Area Recreation Commission (BARC) for over 10 years where her summer teams were consistently placing in the top 5 in total team scoring at Suburban League Championshps.  Kate is the Aquatic Director of the Ballston Spa Village Pool where she has worked for almost 20 years, spearheading the lifeguard staff and their swim lesson program.  Kate began swimming competitively when Ballston Spa built their new High School and Pool in 1999 and competed on the inaugural Ballston Spa Modified, Ballston Spa Varsity, and Ballston Spa Swordfish swim teams. 
 
Kate attended Springfield College where she received a Bachelor's Degree in Athletic Training in 2007 and continued on to receive a teaching certification in Health Education K-12.  Kate competed on the Club Rowing team while she attended Springfield.  Kate currently works full time as the Head Athletic Trainer at the South Glens Falls Central School District and also worded several years in the same role with teh Guilderland Central School District. Kate lives in Ballston Spa, NY
Katie Carstens Assistant Coach

Coach Katie enters her 5th season with the Saratoga YMCA Stingrays as an assistant coach working with Group 3 and Group 4, prepping and developing swimmers at a high level as they move into the advanced groups on the team. Prior to coaching the Stingrays, Katie served as an assistant coach with the Ballston Spa Swordfish club team for 3 years.

Katie has a long swimming history which began at age 5, swimming with the Windwood Swim and Tennis Club in Cincinnati, OH. In 1993 she began swimming with the Countryside YMCA in Lebanon, OH. During her tenure, Katie qualified for YMCA Nationals (1994-2000) where she was a consistent finalist in individual and relay events. She also competed with her high school team, Lakota West from 1996-2000. She qualified for the Ohio High School State meet all four years of high school with her highest finishes of 8th in the 50 free and 5th in the 100 free. Katie swam collegiately at Ohio State University from 2000-2004 where she was a Big Ten Finalist and a Scholar-Athlete for all four years.  She was awarded the Big Ten Academic All-Conference Team for the 2003-2004 season to which Katie was also team captain for the womens team.  Katie has continued swimming on Masters teams in Alexandria, VA and now in Saratoga Springs, NY.

Katie has a Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering from Ohio State University and worked as an engineer from the years 2005-2014. She decided to step away from that field to stay home to raise her growing family. Katie lives with her husband Andy and three kids in Ballston Spa, NY

Kyle Heinemann Assistant Coach

Coach Kyle enters his 2nd year with the Stingrays team and brings a patient and focused approach to our swimmers. Kyle hails from Penfield, NY in the Rochester area where he swam for the Sea Dragons Swim Club since he was 6 years old and was a 5 year Varsity member for Penfield High School.    Kyle went on to swim at Ohio University for one season before the mens swim team was cut from the athletic program.  He graduated from Excelsior University in Nuclear Engineering Technology.  Kyle will primarily work with Group 3.

Kyle lives in Saratoga Springs with his family.

Elizabeth Bonga Assistant Coach

Coach Beth enters her 7th year with the Stingrays after working with the team previously as an assistant coach from 2016-2018.  She works with our Group 2 swimmers and is instrumental in prepping swimmers with the tools needed to further their success as they move up the system with the team. 

Beth is a pillar with the Saratoga Regional YMCA's aquatic program where she has worked since 2004. You'll find Beth with her involvement in the swim lesson program where she has taught lessons to a wide array of current, former, and future Stingrays in group and private lesson settings.  Beth's fingerprints range from the youngest to the most experienced swimmers on the team. Beth swam competitively on summer teams for Ballston Spa through the Ballston Area Recreation Commission (BARC).

She has a B.S. degree in Computer Art from SUNY Oneonta and lives in Ballston Spa, NY

Mary Haley Assistant Coach

Mary returns to our Stingray staff after a 5 year layoff to continue her stellar work with our Group 1 swimmers.  Mary is a Stingray through and through having swam on the team in the 1970s and has served as an assistant coach for the team since the early 2000s.  Mary's experience and passion will be of great importance for our new Stingrays for the coming seasons as she guides our young swimmers with her .  We're thrilled to have Coach Mary back on deck!

Edward Holcomb Assistant Coach

EJ has been a well known figure around the Stingrays for 5 years.  While his primary duty is as our Level 2 Official, he fills in when needed as an assistant coach at meets.  EJ is very helpful getting new families acclimated to the Stingrays and to the world of competitive club swimming. His swimming credentials include certifiaction as a Level 1 and 2 YMCA Official, USAS Stroke and Turn Official, YMCA and USAS Coach, and Red Cross Lifeguard.

EJ is a retired helicopter instructor pilot for the US Army.  He flew Apache helicopters on active duty for ten years, and Blackhawk helicopters in the NY Army National Guard for another 10 years.  He had mulitple deployments to Iraq and the Middle East and was stationed both in Germany and Korea.  EJ also flew a helicopter air ambulance for 5 years for Albany Medical Center.

EJ Is married to Joy, who works as a Nurse Practioner at Wellnow Urgent Care.  They have two children, Miyoko and Hiroshi and live in Saratoga.
