Age Group 1 February Meet Wrap-ups

Lost Dutchman Meet Summary:

There was a lot of good and a lot of not-so-good to come out of Lost Dutchman. We executed race strategy very well and a lot of our details (turns, breakouts, finishes, underwaters) were maintained throughout entire races. The only thing we need to work on is moving past a bad swim and giving ourselves the best chance at a great swim. In my eyes, it comes down to self-talk and how we think of ourselves after a bad race. I also think that some of our swimmers were nervous and anxious about races, which is natural, nerves never go away nor should they. However, if we approach every race throughout the season with the same urgency and focus as some of us found at Lost Dutchman, we will be prepared for those nerves.

Regionals Meet Summary:

This was the most resilient, focused, and supportive I've seen this crew! We all experienced some kind of failure during the meet, but we did a fantastic job of maintaining a level mind and taking appropriate steps to prepare us for the next opportunity. The other bit I have seen grow tremendously is the support we all give each other, through success, failure, or hardship. I think this is why we saw some of those jaw-dropping swims, the ones where you leave the pool kind of in shock at the performance you put together. I hope that we can work together to set this as the norm, the energy we bring to each race, the focus we have demonstrated, and the uninhibited desire to find success. Outside of these successes, in the swims we did not find the success we had hoped I saw our details fall through while we were overly focused on swimming fast. Speed will come when we do the technical side of swimming correctly, and it took me a while to understand and apply this concept, "don't fight the water". As young humans, you won't understand that fully, so it's my job to show you. All you need to do is be willing to listen, bring genuine effort, and ask questions!
