Andy Shields Head Coach/Program Director

Originally from Essex, England, Andy moved to America in 1999 to attend Elon University in North Carolina to study Health and Physical Eduction.

Coach Andy took over the position of Head Coach of the Tritons in 2018 after relocating to the the Northeast to be closer to family. Since then the Amherst Tritons has progressed and grown rapidly from a REC based program to one of the top USA swim team programs teams in Western, MA & New England swimming.

During his time at ATST, Coach Andy has helped the Tritons win back to back NE 10 & Under Age Group Championships and coached multiple swimmers to the Zone, Sectional, Futures, Winter Junior and Summer Junior levels. 

Prior to moving to New England Coach Andy spent  8 years in the Georgia LSC both as Head Coach (Atlanta Swim Academy) & Head Age Group Coach (Chattahoochee Gold) where he coached numerous State, Sectional & Zone Champions.

Along with his responsabilities as a club coach, Andy has been a member of the Georgia and New England Zone coaching staff for more then 7 teams and has been part of winning teams in both LSC's. In 2024 & 2025 Coach Andy was named the Head Coach of the NE Zone Team.

In addition Coach Andy is also involved with the NE LSC Age Group Committee where he was named the NE Age Group Chair in 2024. In addition he has spent time as is a USA Paralympic travel coach who helped introduce, guide and coach National Paralympic team member, Olympic Gold Medalist (2021 & 2024) and world recorder holder Gia Pergolini. 

Xavier Rivera Lead Coach - T-Seniors & T-AG1

Coach Xavier swim competitively from the early age of 5 in the Western Massachusetts area. During his high school swim experience he served as a 2 year Captain of his team at Palmer High school. He began teaching swim lessons at age 15 and took over as the lead coordinator for that program 2 years later. This experience afforded him the oppurtunity to work with swimmer at all age and swim levels, from learn to swim programs to swim team members. 

Upon Graduating from Ware High School in 2017, he returned home and became a volunteer assistant for the next 3 years at Palmer High School. During this time he was primarily tasked with working with the boys team and helped the first group of boys from Palmer to reach the MIAA state meet in 6 years. At the start of the 2020-2021 season he took over as the official assistant where he assisted in practice design, technique development, and primarily worked the top level of the team. He led the first girl in nearly 5 years to the MIAA state meet and helped her achieve a 12th place finish. 

While at Westfield State University, Coach Xavier majored in Movement Science while concentrating in the Physical Education Teacher Licensure. He also minored in Coaching. During his time in college he was a 4 year member of MA-PHERD, the states organization that is focused on further educating coaches and teachers through seminars as well as interactive demonstrations. This combination afforded him the oppurtunity to study a broad array of topics including biomechanics, kinesiology, and youth athletic development. The development of young athletes is what clicked with him the most. Upon graduating Westfield State he taught Physical Education to 7th and 8th graders at the Amherst Regional Middles School.

Xavier joined the Tritons in the spring of 2022 as an Assistant before taking over as the lead Senior and T-AG1 coach in the Fall of the same year. During this time he has coached multiple NE age groups qualifiers, NE age group event winners, Zone qualifiers and assisted in coaching athletes to achieving Sectional and Future cuts.

Xavier's coaching philosphy is that swimming can provide a safe place where swimmer can learn a multitiude of life lessons that can be taken out ot the pool and put to use in one's daily life. He believes that a strong technical foundation and an individualized appproach is the best way for all swimmers to achieve their goals. This achieved through goal-setting, discipline, and individualized feedback and enrichment.

Mark Gehring Head Site Coach (Springfield)

Coach Mark started swimming at a young age but fell in love with the sport later in his career. Mark graduated from Elms College in 2013 with a degree in business. He swam all four years of his undergrad. He started coaching USA age group swimmers in 2016. In 2018, Coach Mark was the assistant coach of both the mens and womens Elms College swim teams. He then served as the Head Coach of both teams from 2019 - 2021. Nine different program records were re-set during his time as the Head Coach at Elms College.

Coach Mark has also been the Head Coach for the New England Zones Boy’s 10 & under group for the summers of 2018, 2019 and 2023. Coach Mark believes in pushing athletes in a safe and productive manner.

Hannah Creamer Head Site Coach (Northampton)

Coach Hannah is originally from New Zealand and moved to Massachusetts in 2024 to pursue her master’s degree in Exercise and Sport Science at Smith College. She joins the Tritons after serving as an assistant coach with the Hampshire Regional Dolphins. Prior to that, she coached club swimmers in New Zealand from 2020 to 2024 and also spent time coaching high school water polo in London, UK.

 

Hannah completed her undergraduate degree at Auckland University of Technology (AUT), earning a first class degree with a double major in Exercise Science and Health & Physical Education Teaching. She has a passion for advancing women and girls in sport and recreation and is currently conducting research in this area.

 

As a coach, Hannah is committed to creating a supportive, empowering, and growth-oriented environment, and she loves seeing swimmers challenge themselves and discover what they’re capable of!

Benjamin D'Addario Lead Coach

Coach Ben was a competitive swimmer for more than 17 years swimming at the club, high school, and collegiate levels. 

In addition he was the Captain of both his High School and Collegiate swim team, finishing off his career by leading his team ECSU to a Championship win in 2025.

Ben graduated from Eastern Connecticut State University with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, concentrating in Sports Management, and a minor in Leadership Communication. 

Outside of the pool, he is all about fitness, whether it’s weightlifting, bodybuilding, running, or anything that keeps him active. Coach Ben is also working towards his Personal Training (PT) certification. When he is not training or coaching, you’ll probably find him at the beach soaking up the sun or watching whatever game is on because he is a huge sports fan.

Kevin Walker Assistant Coach

Coach Kevin is currently the Head Men’s and Women’s swim coach at Elms College. During his career at Elms, two program records have been broken, and numerous personal bests by his swimmers. Prior to Elms, his coaching experience includes Hampshire Regional YMCA Head Coach/Aquatics Director; Westfield Wave Assistant Coach/Intern; Lake Quassapaug Outing Club General Manager/Head Swim Coach; and Pomperaug Aquatics Assistant Coach.

Kevin started his competitive swimming career at 14 and swam until he graduated from Springfield College with a degree in Sports Management.

Outside of swimming, Coach Walker is an avid runner. After numerous half marathons and a marathon, he has his eyes set on competing in an ultra marathon in August of 2023!

Brandy Lenzen Assistant Coach

Brandy started her competitive swimming career at the age of 12 and swam until she graduated high school. Her favorite stroke is the breast stroke, which she holds a team record in and what got her to the New York State Championships. She also holds a team record in the 200 Medley Relay.

After High School Brandy went to HVCC in Troy New York and graduated with a degree in Business Administration. Originally from upstate New York, she relocated with her military family throughout the years to New Hampshire, Hawaii, and eventually settled in Western Massachusetts. Brandy's passion for the sport paired with her son being a Triton led to coaching. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with family, relaxing on the beach, boating and camping.

John Fielding Assistant Coach (Springfield)

Coach John started competitively swimming at the the age of seven, starting with the Easthampton Barracudas and eventually swimming all four years while at Easthampton High School. 

With no swim team program offered in College, Coach John took a back seat from swimming until his daughter Emma joined her first USA swim team.

With a shortage of coaches on deck, Coach John saw the opportunity to step up and help provide swimmers including his daughter with more opportunities to train and compete, assisting the full time coaches and filling in on deck when ever needed. After becomong a fully certified coach , the opportunity to help and watch  swimmers progress, develop and break time goals is a big motivational factor, but more importantly Coach john sees himself as a  parent that didn't want to see swimmers (including his daughter) miss out on the benefits, opportunities and enjoyment that can come from swimming. 

Clara Bloomenthal Junior Coach

Graduating in ‘26, Coach Clara is currently a student at Northampton High School  where she is an active member of Key Club, Minds Matter, Chem Club and a Healthcare pathway program. Clara found her love for swimming in second grade as a part of the Hampshire regional YMCA and joined the Tritons in 8th grade. When not in the pool Clara loves to spend her time with family and friends, including her two dogs and cat. In the role of Junior Coach, Clara emphasizes the importance of community, hard work and perseverance while celebrating the achievements of all swimmers in and out of the pool.

Teagen Demers Junior Coach

Teagen joined the Amherst Tritons in 2016 as a third grader. While competing for the team, she has qualified for both Age Group and Senior Championship meets in short course and long course, and is currently a Tritons Team Captain.

As a student at Amherst Regional High School, she is a member of the varsity soccer team and participates in multiple clubs. She also spends time volunteering at the Amherst Survival Center.

Outside of the pool, Teagen enjoys hiking, spending time with her friends and family and during the summer she interns at UMASS. She will graduate in 2026, and plans to swim in college.

Audrey Spiridopoulos Junior Coach

Coach Audrey joined the Amherst Tritons in 2016 as a third grader. Since then, she has qualified for Age Group and Senior Championship meets in both short course and long course, and was elected to the New England Athlete Executive Committee in 2023.

In addition, Audrey is currently a Tritons Team Captain. As a student at Amherst Regional High School, she is a member of the Environmental Action Club and the varsity Alpine Ski Team.

Outside of the pool, Audrey enjoys water skiing, photography, spending time with her friends, and her 3 cats. She will graduate in 2026, and plans to continue swimming competitively in college.
