CSI 2022 Meet Recap

Josh Sorensen

This past weekend saw a contingent of four swimmers from the Fort St. John Inconnu head down south to compete in the Cascade Swimming International. The meet featured over 300 swimmers from across Western Canada, as teams from BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan, (as well as a team from Houston, Texas) made the trip. The meet was held at the beautiful MNP Community and Sports Centre in downtown Calgary.

Owen Lang, Alex McDonald, Ryder Modde, and Kieran Rogers swam in a total of 27 events, walking away with 17 new lifetime bests. A few of those best times were able to garner medals at the meet as both Alex and Ryder walked away with individual silver medals. Alex swam the 50m Breaststroke in a time of 31.06, taking a Silver Medal in the process as well as swimming to a Top 10 time for his age group in BC. Similarly, Ryder won his Silver in the 100m Breast with a time of 1:23.20, that time also puts him in the Top 10 for his age category as well as within half a second of the club record. Other swims that made moves on the leaderboards were Owen’s 50 Fly and Kieran’s 100 Breast. With Owen’s 27.01 in Finals, he powered his way to a 5th place finish at the meet, good enough for Top 15 in BC and moving up to #4 on Inconnu’s all-time ranking. For Kieran, despite coming in as the 7th seed for the 100 Breast, he was able to drop over 3 seconds and come close to medaling, taking home 4th. In total the swimmers competed in 8 A-Finals.

The meet gave all of the swimmers a great opportunity to compete at a championship level meet, being able to race with some of the top swimmers in the country. The meet served as another chance to learn and experience long course racing, a much different game than short course. Further, the ability to partake in events like these in new and exciting venues shows the swimmers some of the more exciting aspects of swimming. Racing should be fun on its own, but with a crowd in the stands and an announcer on the mic, it has the potential to come to a new level.

Next up for Inconnu will be the North and Interior Summer Divisionals down in Sunny Kelowna from June 24-27th. There, a group of almost 10 swimmers will compete with some of the best in the region over three days. At the Winter edition of this meet, Inconnu was able to come back with a 6th place finish and 23 medals.
