Theme of the Week: Breaststroke
Breaststroke - Head Position - Driving the Head Forward
As a young swimmer back in the 70's and 80's, we were not allowed to put our head under the water during breaststroke. To do so meant disqualification. Crazy right? Young or new swimmers tend to keep their heads in an upright position so they can see where they are going. By keeping your head up, you are not able to drive under the water and this creates a lot of resistance. Greater momentum and speed is achieved if we can get our bodies 100% under the water. In order to achieve this optimal body position, we want to make sure we are driving forward at the end of our stroke. When driving forward, we want our heads to be in line with our spine as we reach our hands forward in a streamline position. A great drill to try is the "tennis ball drill". This drill will help young swimmers from lifting their heads and eliminate any bobbing motion.
