Tryout Information:

  • All new swimmers must attend a tryout before registering for our programs. To enroll in any of our programs, swimmers must be able to swim a minimum of 25m front crawl, which is around a level 5 or 6 in traditional swim lessons.
  • Please note that if you are a current NYAC competitive or Waves swimmer, you do not need to attend a tryout. You will receive a placement in June for the next season.
  • If you are a former Waves or Camp swimmer, you do not need to attend a tryout to register for the Waves program. However, you must attend a tryout to be assessed for the competitive program.
  • Tryouts will last approximately 15 minutes; please arrive on time for your scheduled appointment.
  •  For each swimmer in your family attending tryouts, you must complete a separate Jotform and the consent forms to book a tryout time.
  • Please bring your swimmers dressed in their swimsuits. They may change once finished and are encouraged to wear clothes and shoes that are easy to put on and take off. Outdoor shoes are not allowed on deck.
  • Swimmers should bring a towel, goggles and a swim cap if possible. Caps are mandatory at the Glendon Pool, and we will have spares available for you to borrow.
  • Linda Liberta will be present at all tryouts and will be available to help answer any questions you may have.

The purpose of the tryouts is for the coaches to evaluate your swimmer's stroke development and not their ability to swim fast.  This is true for all programs within our club, whether you are new to swimming or already have competitive swimming experience.  Our entry-level Waves program requires swimmers to swim 25m (one length of the pool) front crawl, which is around a level 5 or 6 in swimming lessons.  The front crawl does not need to be perfect; we need the swimmers to be strong enough to get to the other side of the pool and to be able to handle an hour-long training session.

Swim Ontario Temporary Assumption of Risk Form (to be filled in for tryouts)

NYAC offers two youth swimming programs:

Waves Program

  • Our pre-competitive team teaches swimmers the four competitive strokes, emphasizing mastering the kicks. Swimmers are also introduced to flip-turns, diving, and the basics of racing.
  • Training is available once or twice a week, with an end-of-season competition.

What are we looking for in the Waves Program?

  • For swimmers aged 6-12 years, Teen Waves for swimmers aged 13-17 years
  • Ability to swim 25m front crawl (1 full lap of a pool) without stopping
  • A love for swimming, a willingness to try their best and take direction from a coach

Competitive Stream

  • This is for swimmers aged 8-18 years interested in going further with competitive swimming. Swimmers who have just started up to National and International swimmers are welcome in NYAC programs.
  • A coach must select swimmers to enter the Competitive Stream.
  • All competitive programs start with a minimum of three times a week of practice commitment with attendance at monthly competitions.

What are we looking for in the Competitive Program?

  • At least 3 types of strokes must be mastered: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly kick.
  • Swimmers that are TRAINABLE. Swimmers need to be able to listen, respond, and follow their coach's instructions.
  • Swimmers who are DETERMINED. Do they have a desire to be a part of a team? Can they function within a larger group of swimmers? Do they want to get better? Do they have the confidence and desire to compete? Will they attend the program more than 80% of the time?
  • Does your family want to be a part of the NYAC community? Does your swimmer want to commit to the time and dedication needed for success? NYAC is a not-for-profit Club, and when you commit your swimmer to the competitive program, you are committing to support your swimmer and the NYAC community by helping out with swim meets.
