Ashley Watson

Here is our first training tip of the month! This month's training tip is to master the fundamentals.

Watson Basketball Academy is dedicated to teaching kids ages 7+ the basic fundamentals of basketball. We offer skills training through different avenues such as group training, private training, camps, and monthly clinics. Mastering the fundamentals is crucial as it forms the foundation for all other aspects of the game. The fundamentals consist of skills such as shooting, dribbling, passing, footwork, and defense. Here are a few reasons why mastering these fundamentals is important.

  1. Skill Development: Watson Basketball Academy focuses on individual skills that each player needs in order to take their game to the next level. Through our training programs you can master the fundamentals which will allow players to develop a solid skill set. Shooting, for example, requires proper technique, balance, and coordination. By mastering shooting fundamentals, players can consistently make accurate shots.

  2. Basketball IQ: The fundamentals of basketball provide a deep understanding of the game itself. Basketball is not just about skill but there is a mental aspect to it as well. Dribbling skills enable players to navigate through defenses and create scoring opportunities. Passing fundamentals such as knowing when to pass and what kind of pass to use facilitate effective ball movement and help players make the right decisions on the court. By mastering these skills, players can better comprehend the flow of the game and make smarter choices.

  3. Progression: The fundamentals act as stepping stones for advanced techniques and strategies in basketball. Once players have mastered the basics, they can progress to more complex skills and tactics.

  4. Consistency and Efficiency: Mastering fundamentals leads to consistent and efficient performance. When players have a solid foundation, they can execute skills accurately and efficiently, resulting in improved shooting percentages, reduced turnovers, and better overall performance.

It is through a strong foundation of fundamentals that players can reach their full potential and excel in the sport.
