July 2024 Tip of the Month: Mastering the Art of Ball Handling

Ashley Watson

For July, our focus is on improving your dribbling skills to enhance ball control. In today's game of positionless basketball, strong ball handling is essential for all players, regardless of their position. Consistent practice is key to mastering ball handling, and here are five drills to incorporate into your routine:

  1. Low Dribble Drills: Practice dribbling the ball low to the ground with both hands. Keep your head up and use your fingertips to control the ball. This will improve your hand speed and control.

  2. Crossover Drills: Perform crossovers in quick succession to improve your agility and reaction time. Make sure to stay low and keep your movements sharp.

  3. Figure Eight Drills: Dribble the ball in a figure-eight pattern around your legs. This drill enhances coordination and ball control.

  4. Two-Ball Dribbling: Dribble two basketballs simultaneously, one in each hand. This drill increases your ambidexterity and overall ball handling ability.

In positionless basketball, where every player needs to be versatile, mastering ball handling is crucial. It allows players to effectively drive to the basket, create space, and make precise passes, no matter their position on the court. Remember, the more you practice, the better your control and confidence will become.

Happy dribbling! 🏀
