What Skills Are Taught in Beginner Group Training at Watson Basketball Academy?

Ashley Watson

At Watson Basketball Academy, beginner group training is designed to build a strong foundation for young athletes. Every drill, every session, is focused on helping kids develop confidence, coordination, and essential basketball skills they’ll use for years to come.

I draw from a variety of trusted resources, including USA Basketball and Breakthrough Basketball, to create fun, effective drills that meet athletes where they are. These organizations offer proven methods for teaching youth players at all skill levels — and I combine their best ideas with my own coaching experience to deliver high-quality training.

🏃 Key Skills We Focus On in Beginner Group Training

Here’s a look at what your athlete works on each week:

Jumpstops & Pivots
We break down the basics of stopping on balance and learning to pivot correctly — the building blocks of good footwork and ball control.

Footwork & Coordination
Using tools like the agility ladder, we help athletes develop quicker feet, better balance, and overall body control.

Ball Handling
We introduce a variety of dribbling moves (stationary and on the move) to help athletes get comfortable with the ball and improve their control.

Passing Fundamentals
We teach and practice the three main passes — chest pass, bounce pass, and overhead pass — focusing on accuracy, timing, and decision-making.

Game Awareness & Listening Skills
We integrate listening and following instructions into every drill so players build focus, discipline, and coachability.
