Olympians to Compete at Santa Clara Grand Prix
More than 10 U.S. Olympians, including Olympic gold medalists Natalie Coughlin (Vallejo, Calif.) and Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Calif.), will compete at the Swimnetwork.com Santa Clara International Grand Prix, June 17-20 in Santa Clara, Calif. The meet is the second-to-last stop of the eight-meet USA Swimming Grand Prix Series.
The strong field of swimmers expected to compete in Santa Clara includes Olympians Dana Vollmer (Granbury, Texas), Nathan Adrian (Bremerton, Wash.), Julia Smit (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.), Christine Magnuson (Tinley Park, Ill.), Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill.), Megan Jendrick (Tacoma, Wash.), Elizabeth Beisel (Saunderstown, R.I.), and Ricky Berens (Charlotte, N.C.). National Teamers Dagny Knutson (Minot, N.D.), Kasey Carlson (Walnut Creek, Calif.), Lara Jackson (Tucson, Ariz.), and Kevin Swander (Carmel, Ind.) will also swim in Santa Clara.
The competition will follow the traditional meet schedule of morning prelims and evening finals. The full competition schedule can be found online. Finals begin at 4 p.m. PT on Thursday and at 5 p.m. PT, Friday through Sunday. Prelims begin at 9 a.m. PT, Friday through Sunday. Tickets for the meet can be purchased on online through the Santa Clara Swim Club Web site.
Competition footage from the meet the will be broadcast by both Universal Sports and Swimnetwork.com. Universal Sports will air footage from the finals Saturday, June 19 through Sunday, June 20 on its digital cable channel. Swimnetwork.com will provide a LIVE online stream of the Universal Sports broadcast. In addition, Swimnetwork.com will webcast the finals on Thursday and Friday, and the prelims from each day of competition.
The top medal-winner at the conclusion of the Grand Prix Series will be awarded $20,000, courtesy of USA Swimming. Swimmers are awarded five points for a gold medal, three points for a silver medal and one point for a bronze medal. The Series concludes July 11 in Los Angeles. National Teamer Chloe Sutton is the current Grand Prix Series leader. The leaderboard can be found online at www.usaswimming.org/grandprix.
