Team Levels

The West Volusia Swim Club offers training and practice groups for swimmers of all ages and ability levels. It is the goal of the West Volusia Swim Club to offer age-specific training for all of our athletes geared towards challenging each individual and developing each individual to the best of THEIR abilities.

EVALUATION PROCEDURE AND GROUP ASSIGNMENT

  1. Swimmers will be evaluated by one of the Coaches to determine if they are ready to join the team.
  2. Prospective swimmers can try out any WVKW  practice. Please email or call to set up an appointment.
  3. Trials for group advancement will be held on Fridays.

Group Advancement Standards

Level Advancement Criteria *Coaches will have the final say on level placements.

SENIORS (Blue and Silver):

This group will include all swimmers who are advanced swimmers.  Aerobic and physical training will be the focus of this group along with education in stroke mechanics, dry-land training, and race preparation. Senior swim groups will be structured to allow each athlete to reach his or her highest potential. 

Senior Silver competes at the Senior Champs and Sectional level and meets the criteria below.

  • Attend 5-7 Practices - 2 hours each (minimum of 5) each week and be completely proficient in all four strokes
  • 3,500-7,000 yards per practice
  • 3 X 200 IM's @ 3:00
  • 3X200 Free @ 2:30
  • 6 x 50 on :45
  • 6 x100 on 1:20 (alternating sets) 
  • 8 X 50's IM order on :50
  • 500 free under 6:30

Senior Blue - High School age and focus is on stroke development and speed.

  • Must attend a minimum of 3 practices.  
  • 3,000 - 5,500 yards per practice
  • 3 x 200 @ 3:00
  • 2 x 100 IM @ 3:30
  • 6 x 100 @ 1:40
  • 6 x 50 @ :50
  • 8 x 50 IM order @ :55
  • 500 free under 8:00

 

JUNIORS (INTERMEDIATE GROUP):

This group will continue to work on perfecting stroke mechanics in all four competitive strokes.  Junior swimmers learn to do small sets and swim a bit more than the novice group.  Rules of swimming, kicking, and stroke perfection will be a big focus in this group.  Dry-land training will also be introduced.

Hour-and-a-half practices, 5 days per week.

Junior Swimmers Must Be Able To Swim:

  • 1 X 200 IM no DQ
  • 1 x 200 Free under 3:30
  • 3 x 100 @ 2:00
  • 8 X 50's on 1:10
  • 8 X 25's IM order @ :40 
  • Complete a safe racing start from the starting block.

 

NOVICE (BEGINNING GROUP - Coach evaluation and pass swim test):

Novice swimmers will learn the basics of competitive swimming, breathing, pull, kick, and streamline. Time is spent on drills to learn good technique. Swimmers will learn the basic rules and mechanics of all four strokes and be introduced to starts, turns, and finishes. New swimmers will have fun while learning to swim, start and turn correctly before moving on to our next group.

Novice Swimmers Must Be Able To:

  • Swim 25 yards - the length of the pool without stopping, in a reasonable and safe fashion.

  • Pay attention and listen to the coach's instructions.
