TRSC’s Seven Practice Groups

The coaches of Three Rivers Swim Club (TRSC) in Rome, Georgia, design and present courses of instruction for young swimmers of various ages and levels of experience.  All the coaches share an interest in creating on the pool deck an emotionally healthy place for young people to learn how to swim well. They do their utmost to engage swimmers in an enjoyable and challenging way and to nurture in the swimmers an excitement about great swimming.

To make sure that each swimmer has both appropriate challenges to meet and friends to swim with, the coaches assign swimmers to one of seven groups – Novice (7-17 year olds), Intermediate C (7-9 year olds), Intermediate B (10-12 year olds). Intermediate A (9-12 year olds), Pre-Senior (12-14 year olds), Senior B (14-18 year olds), and Senior A (14-18 year olds).

The assignment of a swimmer to a particular group depends on the swimmer’s age, swimming ability, past swimming experience, emotional development, focus and motivation.

Novice Group/ Mini-Session

The Novice group is for any child or young adult between the ages of 7 and 17 years old who can swim 25 yards unassisted in some fashion but who otherwise has had little or no formal instruction in swimming. Members of this group must want to learn a lot about the sport of swimming in just a few classes,  and must be able to be attentive and respectful to the coaches and to each other for at least one hour at a time.

Novices learn the basics of the sport of swimming in short, stand-alone programs of instruction, each of which is called a "TRSC Mini-Session." Each TRSC Mini-Session is composed of nine classes of intense yet fun technique instruction.   Classes convene either three times a week for three weeks or once a week for nine weeks.

In TRSC Mini-Sessions, Novices learn the basics of good freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke, dives, turns, and wall starts. For optimal learning, they do most drills in 10-yard stretches. There is much review of material from one hour to the next so missing a class or two is not an obstacle to huge improvement.

Novices get comfortable fairly quickly with the basic skills introduced in a TRSC Mini-Session.  Some Novices take one Mini-Session to do so, others (typically the 7,8 and 9 year olds) may take two or three Mini-Sessions to do so. Either way, once they have a good feel for the basics, they are no longer considered novice swimmers but rather “established" swimmers.  At this point, if they are interested in further growing into the sport, they are eligible to join their age group in TRSC’s year-round Regular Session.

Pre-Intermediate/ Intermediate C Group

Pre-Intermediate/Intermediate C swimmers are established swimmers ages 7 to 9 years old who have completed one or more TRSC Mini-Sessions.

Pre-Intermediate swimmers attend three water practices each week in which they receive instruction, do drills, increase overall fitness, and play games. Intermediate C swimmers have five water practices available each week. Attendance at a minimum of two practices a week is recommended for the Intermediate C swimmers.

Pre-Intermediate/Intermediate C swimmers add length and relaxation to their strokes, develop better and better “feel for the water,” gain endurance and have fun. Time is set aside each week for both structured and unstructured play.

Pre-Intermediate/Intermediate C swimmers work especially on the rhythm of both butterfly and breaststroke, as well as on their balance and kick in all strokes. Practices are conducted primarily in 25 or 50 yards lengths.

Intermediate B Group

Intermediate B swimmers are established swimmers ages 10 to 12 years old who have completed one or two TRSC Mini-Sessions and who have joined TRSC’s year-round Regular Session to become, with others their age, really competent and versatile swimmers.

Intermediate B swimmers have five water practices available each week in which they receive instruction, do drills, increase overall fitness, and play games. Attendance at a minimum of three practices a week is recommended.

Intermediate B swimmers add length and relaxation to their strokes, develop better and better “feel for the water,” gain endurance and have fun. Time is set aside each week for both structured and unstructured play. Informal racing and meet preparation is included for those who are interested.

The Intermediate B swimmers focus especially on the rhythm of butterfly and breaststroke, and on effective kicking. They do body weight and stretch cord exercises on deck for general conditioning. Practices are conducted primarily in 50, 75 and 100-yard lengths.

Intermediate A Group

Intermediate A swimmers are established swimmers ages 9 to 12 years old who have effective technique in backstroke, freestyle, butterfly, breaststroke, flip turns, touch turns, racing starts, and underwater breakouts, and who are particularly motivated to compete.

Intermediate A swimmers have five water practices available each week in which they receive personal instruction, do drills, improve all their skills and get increasingly well-conditioned. Attendance at a minimum of four practices a week is recommended.

Swimmers in this top Intermediate group are assigned more yardage and intensity in practice than are other Intermediates. They become sensitive to the body’s responses to pace changes, increase overall conditioning, and start to focus on racing and race preparation. Time is set aside each week, nonetheless, for structured and unstructured play.

Intermediate A swimmers continue to focus on technique even as they start to increase their training yardage and intensity, and they work a lot on their kicking. They do body weight and stretch cord exercises on deck for general conditioning. Practices are conducted increasingly in repeats of 75,100, 150 and 200-yard lengths, with occasional 500s or longer.

Pre-Senior Group

Pre-Senior swimmers are established swimmers ages 12 to 14 years old who have effective technique in backstroke, freestyle, butterfly, breaststroke, flip turns, touch turns, racing starts, and underwater breakouts and who want to increase endurance, speed, and power.

Pre-Seniors train simultaneously with the Seniors. They have seven water practices available each week in which to receive personal instruction, do drills, increase their abilities and overall conditioning. Attendance at a minimum of four to five practices a week is recommended.

Pre-Seniors do practices of increasing yardage and intensity, become sensitive to the body’s  response to changes of pace, and increase overall conditioning.  Those who are interested start to focus more and more on racing and race preparation.

Pre-Senior swimmers continue to focus on technique, even as they start to increase their training yardage and intensity, and on their kicking. They also do body weight and stretch cord exercises on deck for general conditioning. Practices are conducted increasingly in repeats of 75,100, 150 and 200-yard lengths, with occasional 500s or longer.

Senior A swimmers do practices that challenge them with more yardage and/or intensity, depending on their chosen events. They increase their understanding of pace, become sensitive to the  body’s response to changes of pace, increase overall conditioning, and focus more and more on racing and race preparation.
