Coaching Staff
Reid Yamamoto Head Coach

Reid moved to Maui in 1991 after graduating from the University of Hawaii with a degree in Travel IndustryManagement.  He swam competitively for 12 years (with Hawaii Swimming Club), including swimming 4 years at the University of Hawaii; and has been coaching swimming since 1985.  Reid began coaching Hawaii Swimming Club in 1985 and in 1989 he became head coach of HSC.  Since then, he has coached Hawaiian record holders, state champions, zone qualifiers, sectional and junior nationals qualifiers, a junior national champion, and Olympic Trials qualifiers.   

He is currently coaching the Senior 1, 2, 3 and National Groups.  Reid is an ASCA Level 4 coach and is married and has a daughter.

 

Marie White Assistant Coach

Marie started teaching swimming in 1980 at a YWCA in Hammond, Indiana. Then in 1982 taught at YMCA, San Jose, California, followed by YMCA Gulfport, Mississippi 1985. She moved to Maui in 1989 and began teaching at the Maui Family YMCA. She started coaching with Maui Gold Swim Team in 1998 which merged with Hawaii Swim Club in 2012. She also coached the Special Olympics Maui Swim Team for 15 years. Her other interests are teaching physical education to preschool and elementary school age students. As well as teaching fitness classes for Maui County Office on Aging, EnhancedFitness & Kupuna in Motion on Akaku.

Connor Gunderson Assistant Coach

Connor comes to HSC after a successful high school career at Maui High School.  He was part of a couple MIL championship teams and also had a successful age group career.  He graduated in 2022 and will be attending Maui College in the fall.   

Connor is coaching the Dolphin & Junior Groups.

Mari Yamamoto Assistant Coach

Mari graduated from Maui High School in 2022 and has just started her coaching career.  She will be heading off to Oregon State for college in the fall but plans to try to continue coaching in Corvallis.   Mari earned MIL All Stars in her final year of high school swimming and earned a 1st place in the 100 backstroke at the MIL Championships.  

Mari is currently coaching the Dolphin and Junior groups.

 

Rodney Hayashi Honorary Assistant Coach

 

COACH HAYASHI's BIO:

Rodney has lived on Maui since 1973. He has a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts
from the University of Hawaii Manoa.

Rodney has had an illustrous career working for the Maui Electric Company until his retirement in 2010. 

Rodney began his coaching in 1985. His daughter Kristine was a 4-year State High School champion in the 100yd breaststroke. She also was a Junior Nationals swimmer and later swam for the University of San Diego where she held some of their school records.

Rodney has had several swimmers who have swam and placed first at the Western Zones Swim Meet.
 

Rodney has 2 sons and 2 daughters and 5 grandchildren.

 

Coach Hayashi passed away in 2016 but he will ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED.
