2024 Swim Lesson Information

Purpose: Swim lessons are designed to teach participants functional life-saving water skills, while developing a sense for how the body can move through the water. As participants progress, they will begin to learn stroke mechanics and build endurance in order to be safe in and around the water. Our swim lessons are group lessons and swimmers are divided into small groups based on their age and ability level.

These lessons are overseen by an American Red Cross water safety instructor with current and former swimmers as lesson teachers who are lifeguard, CPR, AED, and first aid certified.

Minimum Age for Swim Lessons: Any prospective swimmer for our swim lessons must have reached the age of 5 prior to the START of the session registered! Swimmers should be able to work independently from parents for the duration of each class! Any swimmer that is not fully potty trained can not attend the class.

Location: Decatur Township Natatorium – Decatur Central HS (Entrance Door 16) double doors to the right before the consessions window.

Cost:

class 8 class session 7 class session
$8.75 $70.00 $61.25

  • You pay for the whole session, if you can not make classes there is no reduced price.
  • Price reduction for those on any sort of financial assistance-Must show verification.
  • Price reduction is also available for decatur staff-email [email protected] with your employee email to get the discount BEFORE you register.
  • Reduced price when you enroll multiple children at once.

We were taking the free/reduced lunch letter as a form of financial assistance, since the entire school gets free lunch we are no longer accepting that as a type of assistance.

Levels: This is what will be taught at different levels. A student must be able to complete the END GOALS before they can move up to the next level. Some children will not learn at the same rate as others and might need to do multiple sessions of the same level before they can move up. Instructors will see on the last day if children should move up or stay in the same level and you will be emailed with that information.

You can sign your child up for the level you think they should start at or come in for an evaluation. If you sign up for the wrong level class we will have to move your child into the appropriate class. This might require moving your class time, if you can not make the new time or there is no room in the appropriate class you will receive a partial refund.

Once you have decided on a class to join or contacted us for an evaluation you can now register for a session. A session is typically 8 classes over 2 weeks where you will come Monday to Thursday. When signing up for a session you will pick a time slot, that is the time you will have classes for the duration of the session.

Some final recommendations:

A swim cap is not going to stop hair from getting wet, there is no need to buy special caps or use shower caps for a 30 minute swim lesson until you get to level 3 where it might be more useful.

Goggles are not necessary until level 2 or 3, level 1 is all about saving yourself if you fall into water.

A suit is not going to keep you warm. The pool is heated to 80 degrees and the air temp is 82, that might be a bit cold for some but you do not need to buy a wetsuit or anything like that. Those only work if they are fitted correctly which means they are skin tight. They do not work if you are getting in and out of the water, which will happen at swim lessons, and they keep you buoyant which is fine for swimming but we want them to be able to keep themselves up not a suit.
