Coaches and Directors
Jim Malley's success in swimming began at an early age and progressed to the 1968 US Olympic Swim Trials where he swam the 100 and 200 meters Backstroke events. He attended Colorado State University and as a CSU swimmer broke the American Record in the 200 yards Backstroke event at the NCAA Finals in 1967. He was an All-American Swimmer, "Most Valuable Swimmer", Team Captain, and CSU's "Most Inspirational Athlete". Jim competed for Bellarmine (1961- '63), College of San Mateo (1963-'65), and Santa Clara Swim Club (1965-'68). As a swimmer for SCSC, he placed in the finals of the Indoor and Outdoor AAU Senior Men's National Swim Championships. His coaching experience includes: CSU Men's Assistant Swim Coach, National Swim Coach for Guyana, South America (Peace Corps Volunteer), Co-National Swim Coach for Tunis, Tunisia (Peace Corps Volunteer), and one of the National Swim Coaches of the National Team in Athens, Greece. As a National Swim Coach for Greece, he and his National Club swimmers participated in two Balkanic Swimming Championships, one in Bucherest, Romania and the other in Athens, Greece. He coached the Women's Greek National Swim Team in the European "C" Champinships in Aarhus Denmark in 1972. He was the Head Swim Coach for the Tucson Racquet & Swim Club (1975-80), Poudre High School Girl's Swim Team (1980-81), the CSU Ram Masters Swim Team (1984-85), and the Loveland Swim Club (1985). He has developed Arizona Age Group State Record holders and Arizona High School State finalists, Junior National qualifiers and finalist and Masters National finalists during his tenure in Arizona. He also served as the Swim Coaches Representative to the Arizona State Swim Committee (1978-79). As the swim coaches representative, he organized the first Arizona North-South Dual Meet (1978), which has now become known as the Arizona State All Star Swim Championships. He developed three CSU Ram Masters swimmers to the Finals of the Masters Nationals in 1984 and 1985.
Jim graduated from CSU with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Education and Physical Education (1969) and a Master's Degree in Education (1985). He has a Thesis Abstract published in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, Volume 17, No. 2, 1985 and titled, " Arterial Desaturation as a Result of Controlled Frequency Breathing During Arm Exercise in Swimmers". This Abstract was represented by Dr. Joel Stager at the American College of Sports Medicine Annual Meeting Abstracts on May 26-29, 1985 at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee.
He is married and has two children. He was Academic Dean and Teacher for Calvary Cathedral Academy in San Jose from 1986-89. He is currently an Elementary School Teacher in the Franklin-McKinley School District for the past 21 years (1989-2010).
