Tryouts are available for young athletes who will be 7 to 15 years of age during the 2025-26 ski season.

Skiers interested in becoming a member of the Liberty Mountain Race Team are required to participate in one of our tryouts on Feb 22, 23 or March 1, 2025. Enrollment is limited.  For the coming season, your skier must participate in a tryout the previous season to be considered for one of the open slots. For example, you must tryout in Feb or March of 2025 for the 2025-2026 season.

 

The Future Stars Program is limited to skiers 7 years old (as of 12/31 of the upcoming season).
The Development Team Program is limited to skiers 8 to 9 years old (as of 12/31 of the upcoming season).

The Junior Race Program has limited openings for skiers 10 to 15 years old (as of 12/31 of the upcoming season). 

All participants will be asked to ski with a coach for an evaluation to the current age group standard.  Please see the program requirements as listed for each age group.

 

Requirements:

  • Must have own equipment and know how to use poles.  Daily rental equipment is not recommended. 
  • Can ski all Blue terrain at Liberty Mountain (i.e. Upper Heavenly) in a parallel stance comfortably at speed and with no wedge turns (i.e. no snow plowing)
  • Demonstrate a willingness to ski ALL available terrain at Liberty Mountain (skiers will not be evaluated in how they ski other trails, just their willingness to do it)
  • Demonstrate a willingness to participate in group skiing tasks, receptiveness to coaching feedback, and a desire to improve
  • Self-sufficient and able to:
    • Load all lifts without assistance
    • Put on own equipment and recover from falls without assistance
    • Can take a run by themselves if necessary and use the restroom by themselves
  • Regular ski equipment (including poles & no rentals), a snow-sports helmet, and a lift ticket

LMRT’s Unique Experience:

  • LMRT uses modern coaching techniques, innovative training aids, and positive reinforcement to encourage learning and a life-long love of the sport.
  • Gate training sessions are designed to help skiers acquire race tactics and skills using a mix of age-appropriate obstacle, terrain, & some full-length training courses, timed runs & video analysis
  • Skiing and instruction in small groups is also a major part of each practice including directed free skiing, training drills and instruction, and periodic video analysis
  • Athlete groupings are based on both ability and age

Tryout Dates & Times:

  • Tryouts are held in February and March for the next season.
  • 2025 Tryouts being held Feb 22, 23, and March 1.  Your family must be signed up to attend tryouts.  You need to only sign up for 1 day.
  • Tryouts take about 1.5 hours
  • Athletes need to have ski gear (rentals can be used for tryouts but not recommended) and be able to ride the lift without an adult.
  • You only need to sign up for one tryout date.
