Bill Thompson Head Coach
 

Coach Bill has been a swim coach for over 45 years, and has coached all levels of athletes, from the novice/learn to swim level through the Junior National, Senior National and Olympic Team Trial qualifier level.  Athletes that have trained with Coach Bill have continued their swimming at numerous NCAA Division 1, 2, and 3 colleges, including the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, The University of Connecticut, Harvard, Yale, The University of Chicago, Washington University, Dennison, Stanford, Tulane,  and The University of Florida to name a few;

 Coach Bill also has an "In Water" swimming backround as he swam at Wylie E. Groves High School where he set several team records and was elected captain his senior year.  Coach Bill continued his swimming at Eastern Michigan University where he also set several team records and was elected captain his senior year.  During his college years Coach Bill also played water polo, and was a starter on a team that placed second at the Junior National Tournament.  He was also a member of the Midwest Team that competed in the Olympic Sports Festival in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Coach Bill obtained his law degree from the University of Wyoming where, in his spare time he was the head coach of the Laramie Swim Club and led the team to several state championships.  After moving back to Michigan, Coach Bill continued coaching while practicing law.  Currently, in addition to being the head coach of Motor City Aquatics, Coach Bill coaches at the Birmingham Athletic Club, home of the 2014 and 2015 MICSA League Champion SHARKS!  Coach Bill was also the head swim coach of the Marian High School Mustangs for over twenty years.  The Mustangs are the 2007 & 2008 Division 3 State Champions, and since opting up to Division 1, the Mustangs have finished in the top 3 in the state in the 2009, 2010, and 2011 seasons. In 2014, upon opting up from Division 3 to Division 2, the Mustangs were again crowned as the Division 2 State Champions, and Coach Bill was honored as the Zone 2 and Oakland County Coach of the Year.

Coach Rick has been involved in the sport of swimming for over 45 years. Rick swam competitively at Clawson High School for three years.  He began his coaching career at his alma mater at the young age of 19, when he was named the head coach of the boys program.  He continued coaching at Clawson for 17 years.  Additionally, Rick became the head coach of Lamphere High School’s girls swim team in 1987 where he remained until 2005.  In all, he coached for 25 years before taking a 15 year break after the birth of his first child. During his coaching absence, he remained affiliated to the sport by becoming a registered MHSAA Swim and Dive official. This allowed him to remain abreast of changing swim regulations and allowed him to stay connected to his passion for high school swimming. He still maintains his certification as an official.

 

Rick returned to coaching in the fall of 2018 as an assistant coach for the girl’s team at Bloomfield Hills High School.  He became the schools head coach of the boy’s program in 2019.  He also joined the coaching staff for the club team, Motor City Aquatics in the fall of 2019 where he works mainly with the junior, senior and national development groups helping to fine tune swimmer technique.

 

Rick has had the opportunity to work with a lot of talented and passionate young athletes. His teams have earned multiple conference championships. He has also coached several high school All-State, All-American swimmers and one state champion. Rick has been proud to have witnessed some of his athletes continue on into the college level.  His dedication to coaching young athletes, he has been recognized when he was named Area Coach of the Year for three seasons and a Regional Coach of the Year for one season. Rick loves to share his enthusiasm for the sport, and enjoys the process of watching student athletes train hard, set personal goals, and strive for success.  The life lessons learned in the pool, carry over far beyond a high school experience.    

 

Besides coaching, Rick is married and the proud father of two fantastic daughters whom are athletes in the district. He has a background as an automotive project engineer. Rick has also been dedicated to the fire service for over 39 years. He is a retired Fire Chief and is currently a Fire Inspector with the City of Fenton.

Carrie Drinkert Assistant Coach
 

Coach Carrie is 40 years old.  She began swimming at BHAC as a youngster and completed her competitive swimming days at Groves High School.  She began teaching swim lessons in 1997.  She has been coaching with United States Swimming since 2004, as well as BAC and has currently been coaching at BHAC since 2014.  As a proud Spartan graduate, she earned her Bachelor's Degree in Kinesiology-Sports Medicine from Michigan Sate University.  Yes, Coach Carrie and Coach Steve are married.  Carrie is currently a stay-at-home mom to four children.

Steve Drinkert Assistant Coach
 

Coach Steve has coached age-group swimming in the area for over 20 years. He graduated from Eastern Michigan University with his Bachelor’s and Master’s in education in 1994 and 2001.  He has taught more than 20 years in the Dearborn Public Schools system.  He enjoys humor...it is rumored he has a funny bone!

Andrew Jonna Assistant Coach
 

Coach Andrew has a deep-rooted connection  to the swimming world. His journey began at the Birmingham Athletic Club and at Motor City Aquatics. During his high school years at Detroit Country Day, Andrew committed four years to competitive swimming. Continuing his journey at Albion College, Andrew was a member of two Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) championships. Now, as a swim coach at Motor City Aquatics, Andrew is eager to pass on his knowledge and inspire the next generation.

AJ Zako Assistant Coach
 

Coach AJ started his swim career at the age of seven years old when his family joined the Birmingham Athletic Club. AJ soon joined MCA to continue to grow as a swimmer under Coach Bill. As a part of the Birmingham Public School District, AJ got the opportunity to represent the Berkshire Middle School swim team as well as the Emerald Tide from Wylie E. Groves High School where he served as a captain his senior year. After graduating from Groves, AJ continued his swimming career as a member of the Albion College Swim and Dive team where he served as a captain for two consecutive seasons. During AJ’s senior year, he had the pleasure of being elected captain with fellow coach Nick Johns. AJ recently graduated from Albion in May and is currently working towards his M.B.A at Wayne State University. He served as an Assistant Swim Coach this summer for Birmingham Country Club and hopes he can bring his 15 years of swim experience and knowledge back to his team in his new role. 

Nicholas Johns Assistant Coach
 
Coach Nick entered the world of swimming at six years old when he joined the Birmingham Athletic Club Sharks. Growing up in the Birmingham Public School District, Nick proudly represented the Berkshire Middle School swim team, and the Wylie E. Groves High School swim and water polo teams, eventually serving as a captain of both. After high school, Nick continued his swimming career at Albion College, an  NCAA Division III school, where he was elected captain with his fellow coach AJ Zako his senior year. Nick first joined the MCA family as a Red Group swimmer at age nine, and worked his way up through the team, returning each off-season of his high school and collegiate programs. He is excited to give back to his team in his new coaching role.
 
Outside of the pool, Nick works in commercial banking at J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. He is an avid sports fan, history buff, and music lover.


 
Nolan Kamoo Assistant Coach
 

Coach Nolan first started swimming at the age of seven at Cranbrook Swim Club. After quickly falling in love with the sport, he continued swimming year-round with Birmingham-Bloomfield Atlantis (BBA) and also swam at Berkshire Middle School and Groves High School with Coaches Nick and AJ. While at Groves, Noaln also participated on the water polo team and in student leadership.

After high school, Nolan attended Central Michigan University (Fire Up Chips!), where he swam on the Club Swim & Dive team. This past spring, he earned his B.A.A. in organizational leadership and is currently working toward a B.S.Ed. in secondary education social studies, which he will complete in December after finishing his student teaching at Seaholm High School.

In addition to student teaching, Nolan currently works as a psychometrist at Apex Therapy Services and coaches the Groves Men’s Water Polo team.

Outside of the swim world, Nolan enjoys traveling, playing water polo, and volunteering in the community. He is excited to work with your kids to foster their love of swimming and develop a strong sense of pride, work ethic, and resilience!
