Swim Mentors

What are Swim Mentors?

It is a program that gives swimmers in the Pre-Senior, Senior Silver, & Senior Gold groups an opportunity to work with the coaches and assist with Developmental, Age Group, and Juniors practices. Our Swim Mentors are mentored by the coaches & board members, and will in turn mentor swimmers in Developmental, Age Group, and Juniors groups.

What Do Swim Mentors Do?

  • They may demonstrate skills in the water.
  • They may give feedback during practice.
  • They may teach newer swimmers how to swim on an interval using time clocks.
  • They may present swim information such as what to bring to a swim meet, how to do cards for a 500, or how to stay positive when the meet isn’t going how you planned.

What are the benefits of being a Swim Mentor?

  • They will gain leadership skills.
  • They will receive training from our professional swim coaches.
  • They will build relationships with others on the swim team and make our team stronger.
  • They can earn volunteer hours for National Honor Society, scouts, college applications, or other purposes.

Who can apply to be a swim mentor?

  • Swimmers in the Pre-Seniors or Seniors
  • Swimmers who demonstrate the maturity to be a mentor
  • Swimmers who are positive role models

What are the requirements/expectations of swim mentors?

  • Swim Mentors 12 and younger  must take the online “SafeSport for Kids” training. This training  encourages kids to reach out to a trusted adult when something is not right. It also stresses the importance of being a good teammate, positive sportsmanship, and having a healthy sport environment focused on fun and safety. Parent consent is required to register. (We encourage parents to watch the training with their swimmer as there is valuable, age appropriate information.)
  • Swim Mentors ages 13-17 must take the online “SafeSport for Youth Athletes” training. This course focuses on bullying and hazing prevention, supporting friends who have experienced sexual abuse or misconduct, and resources for reporting. Parent consent is required to register. (We encourage parents to watch the training with their swimmer as there is valuable, age appropriate information.)
  • Swim Mentors ages 18+ must take the online “Athlete Protection Training”. This is required by USA Swimming for ALL athletes who are 18 or older. You will need your own USA Swimming login.
  • Swim Mentors commit to assist at 2-4 Developmental/Age group/Juniors practices per month they are swimming with the club. The exact number will depend on the number of swimmers interested in the program. Swim Mentors arrive at the pool at 6 pm to meet with coaches about plans for the practice.
  • Swimmers must be willing and able to get into the pool to demonstrate skills.
  • Swim Mentors will be offered training and educational opportunities. Possible topics include: Finding Your Leadership Style, Teaching Stroke Drills, Swimming In College, Providing Feedback, Building Community & SafeSport Training
