Competitive Swim Groups

Our Competitive Team is split up in six groups, based on skill, prior experience, athlete commitment level, and age. All group placement determinations will be made by the Head Coach and the Head Age Group Coach after the tryout.

Stroke Development Group

This is our entry level training and instructional group. Athletes in this group are typically 5-7 years old. Practice duration is one hour 3 times per week. There is no attendance requirement for this group, but athletes will improve faster and make more friends the more often they attend practice.

Swimmers must be able to complete the following in order to join:

Swim 25 yards freestyle unassisted and unattended without stopping

Stroke Development Goals:

  • Swim 1 x 100 Individual Medley legally
  • Perform turns and push-offs efficiently
  • Learn to read the pace clock for send-offs
  • Perform regular starts and backstroke starts
  • Push-off in streamline and take 5 dolphin kicks at every wall

Bronze Group

Athletes entering this group are typically 6-8 years old and must complete the goals of Stroke Development. This is the first competitive level that we offer. Four training sessions are offered per week. Attendance in at least three sessions per week is encouraged. Athletes will improve more quickly and make more friends the more often they attend workouts. Practice duration is 1-1.5 hours.

Bronze Goals:

  • Improve starts, turns and finishes
  • Compete in meets once per month
  • Enjoy racing and going fast!
  • Kicking for all 4 strokes is a priority
  • Learn distance per stroke for each stroke
  • Continue to use pace clock for send-offs

Silver Group

Athletes entering this group are typically 8-10 years old and must complete the goals of Bronze. Five training sessions are offered per week and attendance in at least 4 sessions per week is encouraged. Athletes will improve more quickly and make more friends the more often they attend workouts. Practice duration is 1.5 hours.


Silver Goals:

  • Improve starts, turns and finishes
  • 6 x 100 Freestyle @ 1:45
  • 6 x 200 IM @ 4:00
  • 10 x 50 Kick with fins under 50
  • Read the pace clock and know your times
  • Improve distance per stroke and efficiency

Gold Group

Athletes entering this group are typically 11-13 years old and must complete the goals of the Silver group before admission. Six training session are offered per week, and attendance in at least five sessions is encouraged. Practice duration is 1.5-2 hours.

Gold Goals:

  • Improve starts, turns, and finishes
  • 12 x 100 @ 1:25 Freestyle
  • 12 x 100 @ 1:45 IM
  • 10 x 50 kick with fins under :40
  • 10 x 50 kick without fins under :55
  • Read the pace clock and know your times
  • Demonstrate good distance per stroke
  • Begin to learn how to manage effort and intensity through practice

Senior Prep Group

From the age group program, athletes move into this group. Swimmers entering this group are usually 13-14 years-old and must complete the goals of the Age Group program. Practice duration is approximately 2 hours. Six training sessions are offered per week, and while attendance is required at five practice sessions, six is highly recommended. This group incorporates dry-land training and  yoga, depending on physical ability and maturity.

Senior Prep Goals:

  • 10 x 100 Freestyle @ 1:15
  • 10 x 100 Kick @ 1:40
  • 5 x 200 IM @ 3:00
  • 1 x 500 Free holding under 15 strokes per length
  • Display ability to effectively manage effort and intensity through practice

Senior Group

The Senior training group provides the committed swimmer the opportunity to train at a level necessary to attain the highest personal success. This is the highest level of Phoenix Aquatic training. Swimmers in this group are generally 14 years old and older with an extremely high commitment level, and compete at Sectional, Junior and Senior National  levels, as well as International level swim meets. Athletes in this group are expected to attend 90% of workouts. Practice is 2 to 4+ hours per day consisting of dry-land and swimming workouts.

The Senior Program will encompass all aspects of success. This group will learn and implement strategies for proper nutrition, sleeping patterns and the complete athlete training necessary for high performance. We will learn the mental focus and habits of successful people and the difference between them and mediocre athletes.

Athletes must meet the following time standard requirements to enter the Senior Group: Have multiple Senior Metro time standards or Speedo Sectional time qualification. The Head Coach has final say as to who moves into the Senior Group.

The training this group receives is designed to create success at all levels of competition. The athletes in this group are hardworking, positive, and set the standard for all groups within the team.

Senior Goals:

Attend all competitions as set by the coach

  • 90% attendance at training
  • Final in events at Senior Mets
  • Win relays at Senior Mets
  • Score points for Phoenix at Sectionals, Juniors, and Senior Nationals
  • Understand responsibility for his or her performance in training and competition
  • Learn that nutrition and sleep is directly related to performance
