Shawmut Dominates on last day of New England Open Championships!
With just a few events to go on Monday night of New England Open, it appeared as though Shawmut would place 4th. Meg Hutchinson placed 2nd in the 200 backstroke. We had a strong showing in the men's 200 backstroke: Alex Moothart (7th) Kevin Yamada (9th), Teddy Hutchinson (14th), and Alec Gazda (22nd). The women's 50 freestyle was also a strong event for us, with Eliza Butts swimming to a new Open Shawmut team record and winning the event with a time of 26.66. Entering the men's 50 free, Shawmut was still in 4th. Ray McGorry, Eddie Timmerman, and Gabe Davis placed 6, 7, and 8th. Alec Gazda and Travis Downs placed 15th and 16th. Five men in the top 16 propelled us into 2nd place! We extended our lead over 3rd place in breaststroke with 3 girls (Kathryn Priess, Emily Metta, Kayla Lilly), and 6 boys (Ray McGorry, Roy Sung, Ilie Tomac, Josh Plotnik, Jason Kao, Ben Smith) swimming in the finals. Although tired from a long weekend, the group was excited and ready to rock the Medley Relays. Both our women and men finished 1st in the Medley Relay, and both relays smashed our existing Shawmut team records! It certainly isn't easy to perform at your best during the eighth session of a meet, but thanks to Shawmut TEAMWORK, our group was able to swim their best!
