The Westfield YMCA Devilfish swim team is holding tryouts for NEW SWIMMERS to participate in the Spring 2026 Season. Any swimmer who makes our main team is also eligible to sign up for all seasons, including Summer and future seasons.
Tryouts are for swimmers ages 6 to 18, for both our main team and the pre-competitive team. The age for the YMCA meet season is determined by the swimmer's age on December 1st, 2026.
Each age group will do a typical practice, including warmup, some drill work, and a short set, under a coach's supervision. During this, swimmers will be asked to swim/attempt all four strokes: butterfly, breaststroke, backstroke, and freestyle.
In addition, there will be timed swims as follows:
- 6 to 8 year old swimmers will swim 25 yards of freestyle, 25 yards of backstroke, and an optional 25 yards of breaststroke or butterfly. They will start in the water or off the block/side.

9 and 10 year old swimmers will swim 50 yards of freestyle, 50 yards backstroke, and 50 yards of either butterfly or breaststroke.

11 and 12 swimmers will swim 100 yards of freestyle, 50 backstroke, and 50 yards of either butterfly or breaststroke.
- 13 to 18 year old swimmers will swim 100 yards of freestyle, 100 yards backstroke, and 100 yards of either butterfly or breaststroke.
The age for short course YMCA season is determined by the swimmer’s age as of December 1, 2026. Swimmers who “age up” on or before 12/1/2026 must try out for the next age group.
If your child is selected for one of our teams, the information provided at checkout will be used to create an account on Team Unify, the team's website. Team Unify only allows one parent primary access. The information listed will be used to set the primary account holder.
