Coaching Staff
T J Day Head Coach / CEO / Senior 1

Day has been coaching at all levels for over 15 years, and most recently spent 4 years as the assistant swim coach at Carmel Swim Club in Carmel, Indiana. There, he coached for the High Performance and 11-12 squad as well as the boys Senior High School Team.

Before his time in Carmel, Coach Day spent 10 years as the Head Coach of Boilermaker Aquatics in West Lafayette, Indiana. From 2003-2007, he served as a volunteer Assistant Coach at Purdue University. In 2006, Day voted by his peers the Indiana Swimming Senior Coach of the Year.

He has  also served on the staff of many Indiana Swimming camps, and been on multiple trips to the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado. In addition, Day was on the staff of numerous Team Indiana Zone and Mid-States Quad Teams.

TJ and his wife Catie are proud parents of two children, Rory and Nora.

Theodore Eimstad Head Age Group
Ted has been coaching swimming since 2005. He started coaching in Boston with Charles River Aquatics before moving to Buffalo in 2011. Since moving he has been the Head Age Group Coach for STAR/UBAM and BAAC and the Head Coach for Velocity Aquatics. 
 
Ted has also spent time coaching water polo in both Boston and Buffalo and still tries to get in and play a few times a year.

Nate Steger Northtowns Site Coach

Coach Steger is in his 8th year with STAR Swimming as a coach after having been with STAR swimming for 14 years as an athlete.  Nate was instrumental in helping this program reach great heights in the past decade.  While at STAR, Nate placed in the TOP 15 all time in many events and was a part of the USA Speedo Championship team in his last two years.  Nate was the receipient of the STAR Swimmer of the year for 2005-2006. 

Nate has been the Head Coach at Buffalo State as well as an assistant coach there for three years. 

Nate went on to attend UNC Wilmington for two years..  While at UNCW, Nate was a apart of the 2007 and 2008 Championships team.  He was also a 2 time CAA conference qualifier and placed in the top 16 in three events each year.   

While at Frontier High school, Nate won the leadership award during his sophomore year.  Nate also dominated the Section 6 scene throughout his career helping the Frontier Falcons to many great wins.  Nate also captured the team's MVP award in his Sophomore and Junior seasons.

Steve Tothero

Steve Tothero previously coached for STAR from 1997 – 2005 and worked with all groups including coaching the Junior Team (age 13 – 14) from 1999-2004.

Prior to STAR Swimming, Steve spent three summers coaching at the University of Texas Longhorn Swimming Camp under the direction of Eddie Reese and Mark Shubert who were the 1992 head Olympic Men’s and Women’s swimming coaches.  While at the University of Texas Steve also taught college-level conditioning swimming courses.

As a competitor, Steve swam for the Decatur Swim Club in Decatur IL where he qualified for Junior Nationals four times in 1987 and 1988.  Steve was a 4-year letter winner at the University of Illinois.  He also still swims with the Nickel City Splash masters team and competes in Masters meets on occasion.

Steve works with the Hamburg Red and Blue Teams and really enjoys sharing his love of swimming with our newest team members!

Catie is an alumnus of Star Swimming and was a Division 1 swimmer at the College of Charleston. She has over 12 years of coaching experience beginning with her days in the local summer leagues before coaching on Star for a short period as an assistant coach when she graduated college. Then coached at Carmel Swim Club in Carmel Indiana for 3 years as the head 10 and under coach. While living in Carmel Catie also coached for Park Tudor High School. Later she coached the 10 and under age group for Boilermaker Aquatics for 3 years. Having a family took her off the pool deck but now she is ready to come back. Her passion for the sport and teaching young swimmers has not wavered. 

Reilly King

Reilly has been swimming for the past 17 years. She was a 4-year collegiate athlete for Siena College where she competed primarily in freestyle events.  Currently she is a member of the Canisius University swim team as she continues to further her education. Reilly has experience teaching swim lessons for the past 8 years.  She also coached for her home club team Parkland Aquatic Club over the summer.

Patrick McNelis

Patrick grew up in Rochester, NY, and began swimming with the Northwest YMCA at the age of five. He continued with that team until he graduated from high school, competing at the YMCA New York State Championship meet almost annually, as well as various YMCA Zone and National meets. He attended high school at The Aquinas Institute, twice winning an individual Section V Class B title. He earned multiple NYSPHSAA qualifying times, and set numerous program records at both the YMCA and Aquinas.

Patrick swam in college for SUNY Geneseo, completing a decorated career in 2004. While at Geneseo, he finished in the top 8 in all his individual events at the SUNYAC Championships each year, and won a pair of individual titles (in the 400 IM) to go along with three relay titles (in the 800 free relay). Geneseo won the conference team championship in each of his four years there, with him serving as team captain as both a junior and senior. Geneseo’s Athletic Department recognized him with its Outstanding Contribution and Leadership Award in 2004.

He began his coaching career early, starting as a swim instructor and volunteer coach at the Northwest YMCA but eventually becoming a full fledged assistant in his senior year of high school (focusing on the skill and stroke development of his youngest teammates) and running multiple weeklong swim camps. He served as the assistant swim coach at Niagara University in 2005-06, and the girls’ assistant swim coach at Tonawanda High School in 2007 before taking time off to focus on his professional career. Recently, he took over as the varsity boys’ head coach at Sweet Home High School in 2021 and then as the varsity girls' head coach in 2023.

Patrick is still an active swimmer as member of Nickel City Splash, a local Master’s team, for which he continues to compete at local, regional, and national meets. As his day job, he works as an attorney in his own solo practice focusing on representing individuals with disabilities and their various legal needs (with a particular emphasis on their needs in public schools).

Alice Connelly

Allie is from Schenectady, NY and has been swimming since the age of seven. She has experience coaching children of all ages and served as the head coach for the Schenectady JCC swim team for the past three years. She also served as an assistant coach for the Albany Starfish as she completed her degree in Human Biology at the University of Albany. 

Allie is currently a Master’s Student at the University at Buffalo studying Public Health. She is passionate about instilling healthy habits and strong mindsets through youth sports.
