Dan Balderson Founder & Head Coach

Coach Dan has swam in California, Hawaii, Germany and Washington. As a student, he swam at Lakes High School in Lakewood and at Central Washington University. He created and coached the Morgan Family YMCA Sea Dragons in ’92 for over 15 years, and also coached both the Stadium High School girls and boys swim teams.

What coaching Ohana means to him:

“Coaching is about giving back what someone who cared for you gave you all those many years ago. Coaching provides the opportunity to make a positive difference in the life of a person – paying it forward to the next and so on. Love having this team and the ones before be a part of my Ohana, my family … most precious reward given to me by God along with my wife Denise, daughter Lindsey and son Seth.”

Coach Dan wishes to provide the opportunity for greatness in each and every person in swimming and in life.

Felicia Yu Coach & Lessons Program Coordinator

Coach Felicia’s passion for swimming began when she took lessons through the Red Cross in her home state of Indiana. At age 9 she was able to join her first competitive swim team, and fell in love with the challenge of swimming butterfly.

In 2000 her family moved to Washington State where she swam for Puyallup Aquatic Club, the South Sound Titans and Valley Aquatics Swim Team. Her events were the 100 fly, 200 fly, 200 IM and 400 IM.

She was a 4A District and State finalist for Rogers High School (Puyallup, WA) from 2004-2007 and a Division 3 Conference finalist for Linfield College (McMinnville, OR) from 2007-2010. She also served in leadership roles as team captain for both her high school and collegiate swim teams. Her proudest career accomplishment was qualifying for State in the 100 fly (1:02) in her senior year of high school, and being voted by her teammates as the “most inspirational” swimmer.

Today, coach Felicia is rooted in the city of Tacoma, WA with her husband Andrew and dog, Happy. As a family they enjoy staying active through outdoor activities such as hiking and snowboarding. They also love to travel the world and experience new cultures together.

Coach Felicia is thrilled to return to the world of competitive swimming and give back to her community through coaching. Prior to her start with Ohana Swim Team, she provided private and group swim instruction to children and adults at the Morgan Family YMCA.  In November 2019, she then transitioned to competitive team coaching and became assistant coach for OST.  She believes strongly in OST’s mission statement of providing  “a lane for everyone” and strives to uphold an atmosphere that is positive, challenging and competitive, yet flexible with family, school and life outside the pool.

Ethan Schwartz Coach

Coach Ethan grew up on pool decks across Washington, beginning his swimming journey at just seven years old with Summer League at Mercerwood Shore Club. He went on to spend a decade training and competing with Olympic Cascade Aquatics on Mercer Island.

At Mercer Island High School, Ethan became a multi-time state finalist, an All-American, a school record holder, and a member of the state championship team his senior year.

He continued his career at the University of Puget Sound, where he was a conference champion and a school record holder in both the 200 backstroke and the 4x100 freestyle relay, and was voted as team captain his senior year.

Before he was even finished with his own career in the pool, coach Ethan found his true passion in coaching. While he acted as an “unofficial helper” with the younger swimmers for years, his first official role was as an assistant coach with Mercerwood in the summer of 2021. He stepped into the head coach role for the team his next year, a position he held until 2024.

Ethan joined Ohana Swim Team in 2023 and began leading his own group in early 2025.

As a coach, his goal is to make a lasting impact on his swimmers, both in and out of the pool—just as his own coaches did for him.

Brett Kolb Coach, Level 2 & Bridge Instructor

Coach Brett has over 15 years of competitive swimming experience. He started out and swam exclusively with the Carson Tigersharks in Carson City, Nevada, then went on to compete locally for the University of Puget Sound. He has been a coach and instructor with Ohana Swim Team since 2019. His mission is to pass down all that he has learned to the next great swimmers of Washington.

Keith Rasmussen Coach, Level 2 & Bridge Instructor

Keith was born and raised in Tacoma, and has been swimming for as long as he can remember. He started swimming at the YMCA and followed Coach Dan to Ohana Swim Team. He swam for Stadium High School, then for Linfield College. His events are the 500 free and 1000 free. Much like his mom, Coach Joni, he believes in a more hands on approach to swim lessons, as there is no better way to teach than demonstration!

Joni Rasmussen Coach & Bridge to Team Instructor

Coach Joni was born and raised in Tacoma.  She learned to swim in 10th grade at Mt. Tahoma and as a junior, her friends convinced her to join the swim team.  While swimming was still difficult, persistence paid off and swimming became a part of her life.  Coach Joni is a teacher at Whitman Elementary in Tacoma.  As a mom, swimming came back into her life when her three children began swim lessons at the Y.  Her twins, Jensine and Keith, are still a part of Ohana and love their time in the pool.  Her favorite race is the 100 Back with the 100 IM coming in a close second.  Coach Joni believes in hands on/in the pool coaching since she works with novice swimmers who are in need of much direction and technique work.
