Robert Walker Head Coach - NTG

Bob Walker became involved in the sport of swimming at an early age. At age four, Bob was enrolled in swim classes. He was well suited to the sport and succeeded quickly, qualifying for YMCA Regionals by the age of nine.  By the age of fourteen, Bob had qualified for YMCA Nationals, placing him among the country's elite.
Qualifying for an athletic scholarship, Bob entered Bowling Green State University in September of 1983.

Bob has coached for a number of competitive teams including the Bowling Green Swim Club, the Curl Burke Swim Club, and Sea Devil Swimming.  After coaching swimming for more than 15 years Bob started his own swim team, All Star Aquatics. Bob has coached every age group including young swimmers, college level, seniors and summer league.

When asked who has been his best swimmer, Walker replied, "All of my swimmers are my best swimmers."

Christopher Schlegel Head Age Group Coach - NDG, AG2, AG1

It was clear to Christopher Schlegel's parents that at a young age he loved the water.  After successfully escaping the baby pool gate enough times, his parents decided it was time for him to take lessons.  Chris began swimming at the age of four at Hillandale Swim and Tennis.  Chris grew up swimming at RMSC & JFD and playing soccer competitively year round in Montgomery County.  Chris began his coaching career at Potomac Swim and Tennis before coming to All Star Aquatics in the Fall of 2007.  Chris began as the AG1 coach at Stone Ridge and eventually gained more programs at ASA.  Chris’ practices exhibit his coaching belief in consistent fundamentals, high intensity, strong emphasis on stroke technique and feel for the water.

Jason Blanken Lead Coach - ADV SR

Jason has been a presence in the local swim community for over 25 years. Jason was born and raised in Silver Spring,and spent much of his youth as a member of the Calverton Swim Club, Paint Branch High School swim team, and Rockville Montgomery Swim Club (MLK). Jason still holds several team records for all three teams. Jason was also a member of the Varsity swim team at the University of Maryland, College Park. His experience with each one of these clubs and teams has provided valuable knowledge, relationships, and a continued love for the sport.

Starting in the fall of 2007, Jason began coaching the Advanced Senior Group with RMSC at KSAC. Throughout his time with the ASG, Jason helped coach numerous Sectional and NCSA qualifiers and several of his swimmers have gone on to swim at the collegiate level. 

Jason graduated from the University of Maryland in 2007 with a degree in Family Sciences. Jason then began working for MCPS,and made the decision to go back to school. He received his Master's Degree in Special Education from The George Washington University in 2013. He is currently a teacher in Montgomery County Public Schools.

Valerie Simon Lead Coach - STG

Valerie is a native of Philadelphia, PA where she swam under James Ellis for the Philadelphia Department of Recreation (PDR). As an age grouper, she was a Championship finalist in multiple distance events at Junior Nationals. She swam collegiately at West Virginia University and held the school records in the 200, 500, 1000, and 1650 for over a decade. During her Mountaineer career Valerie qualified for Senior Nationals, NCAAs, and Olympic Trials. She was also an NCAA Academic All American. 

Valerie is currently the Head Swim Coach at Bullis. Prior to relocating to Potomac, MD, she was a volunteer swim coach at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT. Valerie has coached age group swimmers for both YMCA and USA swimming teams as well as Division I and Division III athletes at WVU and the United States Coast Guard Academy. Valerie’s favorite part of coaching is seeing the joy on a swimmer’s face when they attain a goal that they thought was out of reach.

Mark Lewis Lead Coach - JRs

Coach Lewis is a DC native with over 30 years experience coaching athletes at all levels of club, interscholastic, and summer league swimming in the Potomac Valley.  “Fun in Pursuit of Excellence” is a simple description of his coaching philosophy.

As children tend to identify with play, they might thereforebe engaged enough in a sport to choose to build a career for themselves.  Through effective teaching and training, the results of their efforts might thereforegive them a resume as young student/athletes that would empower them in their future lives.

Such was the experience for Coach Lewis whose career as a 12 and Under in Swimming aided his admission to the St. Albans School with a scholarshipaward in 8th grade.  Graduating as a Captain of the STA Varsity team as well aided in his admission to Columbia University after high school.  While in college at Columbia, Coach Lewis relied on his valued leadership experiences as a student/athlete in the sport of Swimming to earn the respect of his peers and school administrators who nominated him for and elected him as a Marshal for graduation.

Kailee Goldberg Clinic Coordinator & Lead Coach - AG1

Coach Kailee started swimming at the age of 6 for the Garrett Park Ladybugs and fell in love with the sport very quickly. She started coaching over the summers at the age of 14 and found her way to the Tollefson program that same year where she taught in-water & deck stroke lessons and coached Masters swimming for 8 years. She was an Assistant and Assistant Head Coach for the Garrett Park Swim Team for 9 summers and is currently the Assistant Head Coach for the Mohican Megaladons (Go Mo!). She graduated from the University of Maryland in 2023 with a degree in theatre and the performing arts with concentrations in directing, performance, and playwriting as well as a double minor in Arts Leadership and Business. On top of coaching AG1 and AG2, Kailee is also the Rising Stars Coordinator. She is super passionate about developing technique and a love for the sport in young swimmers. Outside of coaching and swimming, she enjoys singing, writing, playing golf, and being a diehard Washington Capitals fan.

Rory Lewis Lead Coach - NTG

Rory brings a wealth of knowledge and experience. Rory is a DC native. He graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School and graduated with a B.F.A. in Graphic Arts from The University Of Alabama, where he was a two-year letterman as a sprinter. He grew up competing in Potomac Valley(Sea Devils) and PMSL(Takoma Park). Rory has coached all skill levels for over 30 years in Potomac Valley with DPR Blue Waves, UMCY and SDS. He coached two years at the collegiate level, as Head Coach of The Men's & Women's Swimming and Diving team, at Howard University.

Kevin Wagman Lead Coach - AG1

Kevin has always loved the water. He is a second generation MCSL coach, following in his father's footsteps. Kevin has participated twice in the 4.4 mile swim race across the Chesapeake Bay. He was an MCSL swimmer for 13 years and swam for Walt Whitman High School, earning a varsity letter. After two years of college club swimming, he turned to weight-lifting and rugby. After graduating from Elon University in 2013, with a BS in Exercise Sport Science, he competed in his first bodybuilding physique competition.  He plans to compete again. Kevin works during the day as a personal trainer for both adults and children. While his forte is strength and athletic mobility training he does have experience with weight control and more specifically fat loss. His coaching moto concisely describes his approach to each workout session, "Train with purpose, perform with pride."

Staci Armezzani Age Group Coach - NDG

Staci is very excited to be joining the ASA coaching staff this year! She has been coaching for the last 10 years with RMSC and coaches Quince Orchard High School during the winter season. Staci coached for several years with Darnestown in the summer before finally giving up MCSL to enjoy some free time. When not on the pool deck, Staci is teaching 5th grade at Lake Seneca Elementary School in Germantown. Staci is excited to bring her love of coaching to all the swimmers at ASA!

Maddy Adams Age Group Coach - JRs, AG2
Maddy is thrilled to join the ASA coaching staff this year! After swimming since the age of 7, Maddy realized that her favorite part about being a part of the swim team was coaching the younger kids and helping them gain confidence in the water. She began coaching at age 14 with Joe Flaherty’s Dolphins, and was also a junior coach with Rockshire. She swam for the Wootton Varsity Swim team and for Joe Flaherty’s Dolphins, and became an assistant coach at Rockshire after graduating high school. She was also the head pre team coach for two years at Rockshire. She has been with Rockshire for the past 4 years.  Maddy is a recent graduate of St. Mary’s College if Maryland, where she was a member of the varsity rowing team. She graduated with honors and earned her B.A in Environmental Science and Anthropology.
Connor Demitz Senior & Age Group Coach - ASG, NDG

Coach Connor is 22 years old and is from Kensington, Maryland.  He recently graduated from the University of Wyoming with an undergraduate degree in History.  Connor has swam for fifteen years and is a retired division I swimmer.  He has worked at Garrett Park as an assistant coach.  In his free time he enjoys working out and playing football.

Benjamin Ernst Age Group Coach - AG2

Hey everyone, I'm Ben Ernst. I've lived in Bethesda for a year and I teach at a charter school in northeast Washington, DC where I'm an elementary reading & math interventionist. Before I moved to the area I lived in Memphis, Tennessee for five years where I also taught. I'm originally from West Springfield, Massachusetts and I graduated from Springfield College (birthplace of basketball) where I was a four year member of the men's swim team. After graduating, I was an assistant high school swim coach for two years. I'm very excited to be a part of the coaching staff and am looking forward to getting started! 

Yuki Nagao Age Group Coach - NDG

Coach Yuki is excited to join the ASA coaching staff this year and. He is currently attending University of Maryland, College Park, working towards his bachelor's degree in elementary education. He swam for ten years and is now an assistant coach for Quince Orchard High School, and Quince Orchard Otters. 

 

Maya Drill Senior Coach - NTG, ASG

Maya’s passion for swimming was ignited at the age of three, and from that moment, she knew she had found her calling. Growing up in Bethesda, Maryland, she swam competitively for Rockville Montgomery Swim Club, Walter Johnson High School, and Tilden Woods. Her early experiences in these programs instilled in her a love for the sport and a deep understanding of the dedication required to succeed.
With over a decade of coaching experience at Tilden Woods, Old Farm, and FINS Swimming, Maya is excited to continue her journey with ASA. Beyond technical skills, Maya is committed to nurturing the overall well-being of her athletes. She believes in the importance of a balanced approach to training, one that includes a focus on nutrition, mental health, and fostering a positive mindset.

Maya is particularly passionate about filling the gap in mental health support within the sport. She understands the unique pressures that swimmers face and is dedicated to creating an environment where athletes feel supported both physically and mentally. 

In 2023, Maya graduated from the University of Maryland, with a degree in Information Security and Data Science, as well as a minor in Nutrition. In her free time, you can find her working out, traveling, or making the most of her AMC Stubs A-list. 

Alex Freeman Executive Director

Alex has been Executive Director of All Star Aquatics since 2014. Alex has a B.A. and B.S. from the University of Maryland - College Park, as well as a M.S. from Johns Hopkins University. Alex has prior administrative experience working for the University of Maryland Men's Basketball Team and the Gary Williams Basketball Camps. In addition to working as ASA's Executive Director, Alex was also a full time educator for Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten aged children at Capitol Hill Day School. She has currently paused her teaching career to raise her daughter.
