Coaching Staff
Jeff Slater

I am a certified swim coach under the Canadian Swim Coach Association and have been coaching at the age group and varsity level for more than 30 years with experience coaching at four Canadian clubs, varsity coaching with two different universities and, most recently, coaching for two years with a club in Nassau, Bahamas. My aim as a coach is to develop an environment where excellence is possible, supporting swimmers to challenge their limits and experience a steady progression of skills through years of development. What I enjoy most about this process is working directly with swimmers to set goals and seeing them take ownership of their own development. With that, one of the most important skills a swimmer can have is intelligence – being able to assess their current state and see a path towards improvement. This takes a lot of insight and thought to follow the path to success.

HYDRA Aquatics is a program based in a single site with the goal of building confidence and competency in and around the water. This philosophy allows us a lot of latitude in building our program to have several different paths to success for our swimmers. We are providing a learn to swim aspect that will branch into lifesaving skills or competitive swimming; we are supporting school swimming at the American School of Doha for elementary, middle school and high school swimmers with our coaching expertise; we are building lifelong athletes through our masters programming; and we will be hosting competitive opportunities for our community to test the excellence of our work.

Marouane Aouinati

I have been working as a coach at ASD since 2012. I am a trained lifeguard, first responder, and swim coach with certification from the American Swim Coaches Association. I believe success is always going to be different for everyone, so it is important to keep all spirits high and always give constructive feedback. My job is to challenge swimmers, so they are constantly striving to improve technique. What I enjoy most about being a coach is seeing these improvements and seeing how much the kids enjoy working hard and really pushing themselves. The best thing is when, after a session, a swimmer comes to me and says, “it was hard, coach, but it was fun”. My role is to support them in this process.

Jawad Abdulkebir Aouinati

I have been a swim coach in Qatar for the past ten years and am certified by the American Swim Coaches Association. I love swimming and I love teaching. I want to share my knowledge and help swimmers to reach their potential. Personally, swimming has given me freedom and confidence to focus on my own personal development. As a coach, I am in the perfect position to share this mentality with students and help them to grow and push themselves. I believe the most important skill when learning how to swim is confidence and teaching swimmers how to control themselves in the water. My job is to make sure swimmers feel safe and supported in the pool.

Youssef Lahyaoui

I am a certified swim coach, open water diver, and lifeguard. Teaching an individual to swim means saving a life. It's teaching someone a skill that they can use in all aspects of their life and something they can constantly improve upon. I am very passionate about what I'm doing – I've been teaching for almost a decade and I can say that when you are passionate about what you are doing, you don't need to work a day in your life. It is so important to make the activity enjoyable. This helps the swimmer develop a love for the water and that makes learning something that they look forward to doing every day rather than a task that they feel like they are forced to do. Swimming is all about efficiency, using the minimum amount of energy to complete the task at hand. If this is not understood, a swimmer’s stroke will be hard work from the start. My goal is to teach swimmers how to position themselves properly in the water, teach them to conserve their energy, and help them to develop a love for the water.

Alex Telegin

I have been coaching for twenty years and I have coached in the Ukraine and in Qatar. I am qualified through the National University of Physical Education & Olympic Sports of Ukraine and the American Swim Coaches Association. I am a certified AUSTswim coach and I have coached paralympic swimmers in the Ukraine.

I believe that swimmers need to know their dream, set a goal and get to work. Excellence has no limits.

The main skill for any swimmer to master is to have heart.

Meica Manzano

I am a certified first responder and coach under the American Swim Coaches Association. Put simply, being able to swim is a very important life skill and it is rewarding when I am able to see students learn and enjoy themselves in the water. The best part of being a coach is knowing that I am responsible for teaching this essential skilll. I love being a coach because I can support swimmers during this process of improvement. I believe in nurturing their dreams to be the best in and out of the water. I believe a swimmer’s mentality can be their strongest asset. At a certain point, athletes start winning races not just because of their strength or technique. One important skill that differentiates the good from the best is a swimmer’s mental fitness.
