Records Fall and Centennial Sends Four to the State Meet
The Section 7AA Swimming and Diving Championship Meet was held on March 13, 2021 with Centennial placing 4th overall with 266.5 points. Placing ahead of Centennial in the rankings were Duluth with 464 points, Coon Rapids with 406 points and Anoka with 268.5 points. Finishing off the list were Forest Lake with 209 points, Andover with 184 points, Blaine with 141 points, and Cambridge Isanti with 114 points.
Hunter Belting’s first place finish in the 50 Freestyle, Riley McNamara’s third place finish in One Meter Diving, Aiden Gillen’s second place finish in the 100 Freestyle and Liam Gulaid’s second place finish in the 500 Freestyle at the meet advanced each of them to the Minnesota State Swimming and Diving Championship Meet which will be held at the Jean K Freeman Aquatic Center at the University of Minnesota on March 19, 2021.
A lot of the excitement came to the Centennial’s corner of the pool during the Section Championship Meet when it was learned that Hunter Belting set a new school record in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 52.98 and he then went on to break the 100 Freestyle school record with a time of 47.29 during his lead off of the 400 Freestyle Relay. The excitement crescendoed for the Cougars during the meet when they realized that the 400 Freestyle Relay team of Hunter Belting, Aidan Gillen, Liam Gulaid, Josh Washburn also set a new school record with at final time of 3:19.06.
Despite its 4th place team ranking, ninety percent of the Cougars races resulted in personal best times. Many of these great performances resulted in changes being made to the teams’ Top 10 All-Times Best Swims Lists. These changes are as follows:
- 200 Medley Relay - George Atkinson, Max Scheurer, Alex Larkin, Connor Herbrechtsmeyer advance to eighth spot with a time of 1:46.37.
- 200 IM - Liam Gulaid improved his sixth spot time with a time of 2:05.95.
- 200 IM - George Atkinson advanced to the tenth spot with a time of 2:15.52.
- 50 Freestyle - Hunter Belting advanced to the second spot with a time of 21.60.
- 50 Freestyle - Aiden Gillen advanced to the third spot with a time of 21.89.
- 100 Butterfly - Hunter Belting moved to the first spot with a time of 52.98.
- 100 Butterfly - Alex Larkin improved his tenth spot time with a time of 59.31.
- 100 Freestyle - Hunter Belting moved to the first spot with a time of 47.29.
- 100 Freestyle - Aiden Gillen moved to the third spot with a time of 48.08.
- 500 Freestyle - Liam Gulaid moved to the third spot with a time of 5:02.31.
- 500 Freestyle - Josh Aardahl moved to the seventh spot with a time of 5:19.81.
- 500 Freestyle - George Atkinson moved to the ninth spot with a time of 5:27.41.
- 200 Freestyle Relay - Aidan Gillen, Josh Washburn, Liam Gulaid, Hunter Belting moved to the second spot with a time of 1:29.78.
- 100 Breaststroke - Max Scheurer moved to the sixth spot with a time of 1:02.97.
- 400 Freestyle Relay - Hunter Belting, Aidan Gillen Liam Gulaid, Josh Washburn moved to the first spot with a time of 3:19.06.
- Middle School 100 Backstroke List - Caleb Creagan moved to the fourth spot with a time of 1:08.43.
