School and Personal Records Fall at the Section 7AA Championship Prelims Swimming Meet
The Centennial Boys Swimming team posted 35 personal record swims, broke 3 middle school records and set a new varsity record at the 2022 Section 7AA Championship Prelims swimming meet that took place on Feb 25, 2022. 100% of the Centennial swims resulted in lifetime best times. The team members dropped a total of 127.47 seconds (2:12 minutes) off their seed times. In short, it was an amazing evening for the Cougars and their most successful meet of the season.
Eighth grader Garret Clark dropped 25.17 seconds in the 500 Freestyle which resulted in him setting a new middle school record with a time of 5:42.00. Charlie Bryant, who is also in the eighth grade, broke the middle school record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.16 and in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.29, while junior Max Scheurer set a new varsity record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 58.59. Max’s amazing performance at the meet has seeded him in the first-place spot for the championship finals event which will take place on Saturday.
The most exciting moment of the meet was freshman Joe Murray’s 200 freestyle swim-off for a chance to swim the race at Saturday’s finals. During prelims both Murray and junior Nathan Wilkerson from Andover swam a 2:02.74 and tied for 16th place in the event. Since only one could go on to the finals meet, the two athletes had to battle it out in the pool by re-swimming the race at the end of the meet. The result of this face off was a victory for Centennial as Joe Murray dropped an additional 1.49 seconds from the personal best time that he had set earlier in the meet.
