Centennial Takes a Loss In Its Match Up With Conference Rival Maple Grove

Coach Kevin Setterholm

Centennial's January 11th, 2024 dual meet against Maple Grove proved to be the Cougars' biggest change so far this season. With its 97 point to 86 point loss, the Cougars hopes of getting to conference championship meet came to an end.

Reflecting on the meet, Assistant Coach Kevin Setterholm stated that “there were many close races and often times the Cougars were the stronger swimmers, but again and again the Maple Grove athletes outperformed the Cougars with faster and more powerful turns.”  All three of Centennials' swimming coaches were quick to point out that younger athletes on the team had a fantastic meet with evidence of improvement in their skill development being demonstrated by the 52 best times turned in during the evening.

The highlight of the meet for the Cougars happened in the 200 IM event when Junior Caleb Cregan placed team's lone first and Sophomore Isaac Nguyen swam to second.  Head Coach Pete Crawford also mentioned that he was very impressed with Freshman Beno Schuhbauer’s 1:58.96 performance in the 200 Freestyle and Freshman Page Grant’s 1:06.51 performance in the 100 Butterfly and 1:06.31 performance in the 100 Backstroke. Crawford also was excited to witness Freshman Brendan Chretien’s 5:58.31 performance in the 500 freestyle stating “now that he has broken the six minute barrier, the team will be seeing big things from him in the near future.”   Sophmore Elliot Shepard also had a standout swim in the 100 Freestyle when he broke the 60 second barrier for the first time.

This Saturday, Centennial will be battling it out with Duluth at the Section 7AA True Team meet at Northdale Pool in Coon Rapids.  Like last year, this is promising to be an exciting meet.
