The Cougars Capture 10 First Place Finishes on Senior Night

Kevin Setterholm

Centennial celebrated the swimming careers of its eight seniors at its last home meet of the 2023-24 season.  The evening began with each senior saying a few words before the start of the meet in locker-room to the Cougar athletes.  These short speeches given by the eight upperclassmen greatly motivated the team to perform at a high level against Anoka, and Centennial’s coaching staff was very pleased at the results.

At the conclusion of the meet, the Cougars had 62 personal best performances and outscored the Tornadoes in 10 of the 12 meet events.  This Centennial victory gave the Cougars a conference dual meet record of 4 wins and 1 loss and a third place ranking in the 2023-24 Northwest Suburban Conference’s season.

First place finishes captured by Centennial during the meet were by Isaac Nguyen in the 200 Freestyle and 500 Freestyle; Benno Schuhbauer in the 200 IM and the 100 Breaststroke; Joseph Murray in the 50 Freestyle; Blake Thorson in Diving; Talen Greeson-Stormoen in the 100 Freestyle; Caleb Cregan in the 100 Backstroke; Manny Poscher, Talen Greeson-Stormoen, Isaac Nguyen, Joseph Murray in the 200 Freestyle Relay; and Isaac Nguyen, Talen Greeson-Stormoen, Caleb Cregan, Benno Schuhbauer in the 400 Freestyle Relay.

The team’s high spirits from its 99 point to 79 point victory over Anoka carried over to a post meet ceremony where each of the Cougars’ eight seniors were recognized and honored by teammate speeches, belly flops off of the diving board and cake.

Next Tuesday, Centennial will be concluding its 2023-24 dual meet season by taking on Irondale in a non-conference dual meet.
