Centennial Cougars Make History by Advancing to the True Team State Meet
Happy Finals Week from your Centennial Boys' Swim & Dive team!
This past weekend proved fruitful for the Centennial Cougars with a win against the Spring Lake Park Panthers on Thursday and a second place finish at True Team Sections this past Saturday, allowing the Cougars to advance to the True Team State Meet for the first time in team history!
Against the Panthers, Centennial garnered a strong win with a 100-74 victory at the Spring Lake Park pool. For many of our JV swimmers, this was a meet that put them in new events, trying out strokes different than just freestyle for the first time. Coach Bob McMullen commented on the progress of these young guys, saying how impressed he was with the JV guys' ability to increase the length of their stroke and continue to work on their technique. "We're starting to see some of these young guys really take off; Sebastian dropped an entire two seconds in his breaststroke leg of the Medley Relay and Blake Thorson has started to take off in his backstroke. These guys are like sponges with the way they're picking up all of the advice in practice." Way to go JV swimmers!
Saturday brought a new host of challenges for the boys as they swam in a tough meet while down a few swimmers due to illness. For the first time ever in highschool history, The Centennial Cougars will be advancing to the True Team State Meet this Saturday at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities Aquatics Center. Facing tough competition from other teams within their section, the boys' swim and dive team secured a second place win with a combined 1288.5 points, a full 200 points above the third place team, Anoka, and about 100 points behind Duluth East. For those unfamiliar with True Team scoring, each swimmer has a chance to gain points, with 1st place scoring 32 points and the 32nd ranked swimmer taking 1 point (provided no swimmers DQ.) Benno Schuhbauer took the top spot in the 500 Yard Freestyle alongside strong finishes by Caleb Cregan and Grant Page taking 3rd and 4th place in the 100 yard backstroke, and a 2nd place finish for Joe Murray in the 50 yard freestyle. Benno also took a close second place in the 200 yard freestyle, as well.
An all around strong showing by the boys this week! Come cheer on the Cougars here at Centennial's pool for Parent Night this upcoming Thursday when the Cougars take on the Osseo Orioles at 6PM and at True Team State this coming Saturday at the UofM's Aquatic Center.
Roll Cougs!
