For the safety of our members, children 10 and under are required to pass a deep water test in order to use the diving board and slide, or participate in free swim in the diving well. Some kiddos are excited to take the test right away, but if your child is a little rusty in the pool, it will be worthwhile to review the test requirements with them and allow them to practice a bit prior to taking the test. Our goal is for all kids to be safe and to have fun, so we want to set them up for success! Once they’ve passed the test, they’ll receive a rubber bracelet/band showing that they’re allowed to safely play in the deep water.
-
Who: All kids age 10 and younger- even if they passed last summer. We use a different color band year to year.
-
Distance: Swim two lengths of the pool: Start in the middle- swim to the 5 feet- then swim a full length- and then swim back to the middle of the pool.
-
Style: Swimmers will keep their face in the water without goggles (when going off the dive/slide, googles aren’t permitted, so kids need to feel comfortable swimming without goggles), using rotary arms (not doggy paddling), without putting their feet on the ground to push off (they need to feel comfortable propelling themselves forward without the use of their feet because that will be impossible once they are in the diving well).
-
Tread water: In the deep end for one minute.
-
Attempts: If your child doesn’t pass the test, they are invited to practice their swimming and then try again the next day.
-
How: To take the test, please stop into the front office and let the Manager on duty know you are ready to take the test! The first few weekends of summer can be quite busy, so please be patient with us! Please note that the test will not be conducted between 2 and 4pm each day as this is the busiest time at the pool.
