Sleepy Hollow Sea Lions Keep up the Great Work!

HIGHLIGHTS & NEWS

Sleepy Hollow Sea Lions vs. Terra Linda Orcas - May 11, 2024

The Sleepy Hollow Sea Lions visited the Terra Linda Orcas on a beautiful, sunny Saturday in a very tightly contested away meet.  The meet started off with excitement as our Sea Lions came from behind to win big in the mixed medley relay races. Beau Panzica made a leap forward with a standout win in the Boys 13-14 50Y Freestyle and 50Y Back, Sophie Jelley swam an impressive freestyle and backstroke in All Star qualifying times, and Ella Isakson closed the gap in her freestyle to win in the 11-12 Girls 100Y I.M. An incredible amount of swimmers saw best times this week, so keep it up Sea Lions!

A note from Coach Mark:

We want to congratulate the Orcas for their hard-fought win against the Sea Lions this weekend. The Sea Lions had some outstanding individual performances but unfortunately came up short of the win. We will use this as a wakeup call and hopefully have a more complete team at meets the rest of the way.

Ribbon Boxes

Ribbons from the weekend's dual meet will be available in file boxes on the snack bar starting Tuesdays. There are slots sorted alphabetically by last name - please only remove your family's contents and instruct your kids to to the same. Ribbons are awarded to all 12 & Under swimmers in all heats and events. Ribbons have a sticker on the back with the event, time and place.

Look out for Best Time Ribbons! Swimmers collect Best Time ribbons and can then earn stars, which can be sewn onto the back of a sweatshirt.

Ribbon boxes may include:

• Colored Heat Place Ribbons - labeled with your child’s name and the heat details on the back.

• Yellow Best Time Ribbons - earned when a 14 & Under swimmer swims a faster time in a particular event than he or she has previously in the same season.

DQ Slips - a slip could mean a suggestion from a stroke and turn judge or a DQ. Treat these as learning opportunities… read the slip with your child, communicate with the coaches, and help your child learn how to improve their strokes.

• Swimmer of the Week Photos - will also be filed in the box after they are pulled from the board (do not remove them from the board yourself – thanks).

• Other paperwork – such as team photo order forms for next week's photo day.

Read more on our website on ribbons, best times and stras, DQs, and other awards. If you believe there is a mistake with your child's ribbons, please double check on the results sheets and write it on the clip board next to the ribbon box. We will look into it and correct any mistakes.

Lost & Found

Be sure to check the Lost and Found this week.  There are many items left from Saturday- umbrellas, camping chairs, and towels.

Traffic Circle Guidelines & Changes on Butterfield Rd.

Traffic Circle Guidelines
We are implementing some new rules around the traffic circle. Parents- use the Traffic circle ONLY TO DROP OFF your swimmer(s). To PICK UP your swimmer(s) please park in the parking stalls to wait. Waiting in the circle is blocks others, as well as causes back-up onto Butterfield, blocking residential driveways and the bike lane.

Traffic Changes on Butterfield Rd.

We want to bring your attention to a safety improvement along Butterfield that is welcomed and supported by the Swim Team. Bike lanes have been painted on both sides of the road, and “No Parking” signs are going up this week. Be prepared for a substantial change in parking availability along ButterfieldParking in a bike lane, even partially, is prohibited (see illustration below)We will need to get acclimated to the changes and how they affect parking. More information to come as it relates to parking for Home Meets. Thank you for partnering with us to create safe bike lanes for walkers and bikers- our neighbors and our children.

Parking and Driver Safety

Please be aware of increased pedestrians and bikers around the Clubhouse, with the start of swim team. Be very careful when walking along and crossing Butterfield Road. Help teach our Sea Lions to be responsible pedestrians and bikers. If driving, slow down and focus. When dropping off your swimmer and/or parking for practice:

  • Do not park in front of the Clubhouse, this is strictly for drop off.

  • Park perpendicular (not parallel) in the gravel spaces to maximize space for other people.

  • Please don’t ever park in the no parking zones across from the Clubhouse or in the handicapped parking spot in front of the Clubhouse - not even to wait for your swimmer after practice/ if you remain in the car.

  • Please do not let your child "jump quickly out of the car" in the middle of the road.  This is not safe!  Please take the extra minute and use the drop off circle.

  • Use the dirt walkway in front of parked cars, and do not walk on the bike path on Butterfield, behind parked cars.

  • Do not block driveways or mailboxes.  Please be respectful of our neighbors!

  • And again, please slow down, and watch out for Sea Lions and parents crossing Butterfield and riding and walking in the bike lanes. These Sea Lions are all of our children.

Bikes

As we partner with the Sleepy Hollow Homes Assocation to increase safety along Butterfield Road, we encourage families to bike to and from practice, if your child is ready for this.  As a community, we are working to decrease the number of cars along Butterfield Road. If you bike, please remember:

  • Please use the bike racks outside of the main black gate and do not block the Fire Zone/No Parking area.
  • Don’t forget to bring bike locks! SHST and SHHA are not responsible for lost or stolen bikes.
  • Bikes are not allowed inside the gated pool area.

No Dogs

Please remember that the Sleepy Hollow Homes Association forbids dogs at the Clubhouse and pool area.  Swim team families MAY NOT BRING DOGS to practices or meets.   Dogs may not be tied up or left outside the gates and fence in front of the Clubhouse,  even if you are just running in to drop off your swimmer. Please help us abide by this SHHA rule and leave your dog at home. Thank you!

Raise the Bar

The Sleepy Hollow Swim Team is proud to be partnering again with Raising the Bar, Keep Youth Events Substance Free. The goal of this important county-wide initiative is to shift the norms of substance use and encourage healthy choices by keeping youth events substance free. Thank you for keeping our swim team events substance free.

Donations

As a volunteer based non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, we rely on swimmer registration fees and generous donations to help us operate while maintaining and building upon our incredible community. Donations specifically help us do this while expenses and costs continue to rise. Donations to our team also help us fund the many FUN events that we host during the season where kids build camaraderie and get to know each other outside of the pool (movie nights, karaoke, casino night, etc).

Every dollar and donation counts! You can donate any amount to our team HERE, and/or donate/sponsor a specific Fun event HERE. Your donation will be tax deductible to the extent permitted by law.

We would like to thank Zamira Solari Realty for sponsoring the team's Fun Fridays again this season! Thank you to the Clarke Family and Celebrations of Marin for donating to the Champs Dinner again this year. We appreciate your generosity and support!
